Hobart Hurricanes v Melbourne Renegades: Big Bash Tuesday preview

Hobart Hurricanes were bowled out for a club-record low of 74 when they started their 2024/25 Big Bash campaign against Melbourne Renegades in Geelong.

The teams meet again in Hobart on Tuesday and the Renegades should expect a far tougher contest against a home side who have won their last five completed matches.

While the Hurricanes are flying high, the Renegades sit bottom of the congested league table after letting Melbourne Stars off the hook in a dramatic derby last time out.

They had the Stars on the ropes at 7-75 before Glenn Maxwell's 52-ball 90 condemned Will Sutherland's Renegades to a disappointing 42-run defeat.

Hurricanes hitters out to avenge opening defeat

Melbourne Renegades needed only nine overs to seal a six-wicket win over Hobart Hurricanes on 19th December, when skipper Sutherland, Fergus O'Neill and Tom Rogers claimed three wickets apiece to bowl out Hobart for 74.

The Hurricanes' batting unit has bounced back brilliantly from that opening defeat and they will be aiming to punish a demoralised Renegades attack.

Maxwell struck 10 sixes in his match-winning innings of 90 for the Stars in Sunday's Melbourne derby and the Hurricanes are a tempting bet at 1.95 to hit the most match sixes on Tuesday.

Their last three victories have all come at home, where they won the sixes battle 6-2 against Sydney Sixers, 11-5 against Adelaide Strikers and 9-0 against Sydney Thunder.

Tim David has been responsible for most of the damage, clearing the ropes 12 times in his last two innings, and openers Mitchell Owen and Matthew Wade hit three sixes in the first two overs of their run-chase against the Thunder last time out.

Owen also struck five maximums in his blistering century against Perth Scorchers earlier in the season and he is 5.00 to score the most sixes for the Hurricanes on Tuesday.

Early wickets continue to undermine Renegades' campaign

Both teams are missing senior players for the Hobart clash as Hurricanes batter Ben McDermott is struggling with a hamstring problem and Renegades fast bowler Kane Richardson was unable to finish his final over against the Stars on Sunday.

Renegades openers Marcus Harris (one) and Josh Brown (four) were both dismissed in the second over of their unsuccessful run-chase against the Stars.

Losing early wickets has been a theme of their season, whether Brown, Harris, Jake Fraser-McGurk or Tim Seifert have been sent in to face the new ball.

The Renegades' opening partnerships have been 10, nought, six, nine, 34, nine, 10 and 22 and they are 2.10 to score over 24 runs before the fall of their first wicket.
