The 28th Melbourne derby in the Big Bash League takes place on Sunday evening at Marvel Stadium with both teams running out of time to make up ground in the finals race.
The two teams met earlier this month, with the Stars running out winners over the Renegades by five wickets largely thanks to an 83-run partnership between English opener Ben Duckett and captain Marcus Stoinis.
Now the two teams head to Marvel Stadium knowing a win will be crucial to their chances of success in this year’s tournament.
The Stars hold a 17-10 winning record in the overall head-to-head between the two Melbourne franchises, while more recently the last 10 showdowns have yielded five victories for each team.
The Stars made a disastrous start to this year’s BBL campaign, losing their first five games, however, since the turn of the year they have won three in a row and will be hoping they have not left it too late to secure a finals spot.
The Stars are 1.78 to make it four wins in a row and continue their upturn in form.
They beat the Sydney Sixers last time out, the team setting the pace at the top of the ladder, in doing so recording their first victory since December 2022 when batting first in the process.
That may not be much use here, however, as 11 of the last 12 BBL games at Marvel Stadium have been won by the team chasing a total.
Stars captain and all-rounder Stoinis could be key, he has an average of 46.80 from 15 innings against these opponents and is 4.75 to top score for his team in this game.
The Renegades will be out for revenge after losing their last match against their city rivals and they still have three games in which to make a late finals push and they are 2.05 to win this one.
Australia limited-overs leg-spinner Adam Zampa famously moved between these two teams in a shock trade between BBL12 and BBL13, but he has struggled against the Stars in three head-to-heads since with figures of 1-83.
The white-ball specialist does have a good record at Marvel Stadium, however, having taken at least three wickets in both games that the Renegades have played at this ground this season.
The vastly experienced international is a 4.33 shot to be the Renegades’ top bowler against his former side
