Giro d'Italia 2025: Date, location, how to watch, odds and more

The Giro d'Italia is one of the three big Grand Tours on the UCI World Tour calendar and is raced over three weeks in May.

The Giro is the first Grand Tour of the season, with the Tour de France and Vuelta Espana coming later on in the year.

Due to its timing, the race is often hit by inclement weather conditions, making it even more brutal for the riders.

The Giro d'Italia was the brainchild of Gazzetta dello Sport editor Tullo Morgagni, who was inspired by the Tour de France and wanted a race that traversed Italy,

The first staging of the race took place in 1909 and is the second most prestigious race of the year, behind the Tour de France.

As is the case with the other two Grand Tours, the leader of the Giro d'Italia wears a special coloured jersey, in this case pink, otherwise known as the Maglia Rosa.

The aim is to be in possession of the Maglia Rosa when the Giro d'Italia reaches its climax.

There are also jerseys available for points classification, the mountains classification and young rider classification.

Here is everything you need to know ahead of the 2025 edition of the Giro d'Italia.

Giro d'Italia dates

The 108th edition of the Giro d'Italia starts a little bit later this year and is due to begin on Saturday 9th May, 2025.

The race runs for three weeks, with the final stage taking place on Sunday 1st June.

Giro d'Italia route

The route for the 2025 edition of the Giro d'Italia will, as always, consist of 21 stages.

In this year’s route there will be two individual time trial stages and three of the stages will be over 200km in length.

The total distance of the route will be 3413km, with the average length of the stages coming in at 162.5 kilometres.

The riders will also need to climb 52,500 metres in elevation over the 21 stages of the Giro.

In 2025 the Giro d'Italia will begin in Albania, with the first three stages of the race taking place in that country.

Two of those stages are classified as hilly, while there will also be an individual time trial before the first race day back in Italy.

The Giro resumes on home soil with Stage 4 from Alberobello to Lecce.

The peloton then heads north over the remaining stages, before the final stage takes place in the nation’s capital, Rome.

Giro d'Italia how to watch

Australian fans will be able to watch the 2025 Giro d'Italia via SBS and SBS on Demand.

Giro d'Italia most wins

Three riders share the record for most wins in the Giro d'Italia, which currently stands at five victories.

They are Italian legends Alfredo Binda and Fausto Coppi, along with arguably the greatest cyclist of all-time, Belgian Eddie Merckx.

In recent times no one rider has dominated the Giro and it is usually won by a different rider each year.

Vincenzo Nibali won the Giro for a second time in 2016, but since then it has been shared around, with Tadej Pogacar wining the 2024 edition of the race.

Giro d'Italia odds

With no Pogacar in the race this time around, the battle to win the 2025 Giro d'Italia is quite wide open.

Primoz Roglic, who won the 2023 edition of the race, is the current hot fancy and can be backed at 2.50.

He is closely followed by Juan Ayuso at 2.75, while Adam Yates can be backed at 6.50 and Michael Storer is priced at 17.00.
