Giro d'Italia Outright Odds: Pogacar absence opens up the field

The first grand tour of the 2025 season gets underway this week and, with no Tadej Pogacar in the peloton, the Giro d'Italia is up for grabs.

Pogacar stormed to victory in 2024, going on to complete the Giro d'Italia/Tour de France double, but has opted to sit out this year.

Without the Slovenian in the field, it looks to be a three-horse race between 2023 winner Primoz Roglic, Juan Ayuso and Adam Yates.

However, there are a couple of riders who will fancy their chances of upsetting the apple cart by taking a surprise victory, including Australian Michael Storer.

Giro d'Italia

Giro d'Italia Outright Odds

Primoz Roglic - 2.50
Juan Ayuso -
2.75
Adam Yates -
6.50
Michael Storer -
17.00
Antonio Tiberi -
19.00
Mikel Landa -
19.00

Primoz Roglic - 2.50

Even without Tadej Pogacar in the race, Slovenia could have a winner of the Giro d'Italia in the shape of Primoz Roglic.

Roglic has already won the Giro once in his career, taking the race in the 2023 season while riding for Team Jumbo-Visma.

He has since moved on to Redbull Bora-Hansgrohe, but still looks like the one to beat in the 2025 race.

Roglic is strong in the high mountains and will also be one of the best riders in the individual time-trial stages.

Bora also know how to win the Giro, having done it with Aussie Jai Hindley in 2022, so it is no surprise that Roglic is the hot fancy to win.

Juan Ayuso - 2.75

There may be no Pogacar, but UAE Team Emirates still believe they have a rider capable of winning the Giro d'Italia.

Juan Ayuso is their designated leader and they have built a strong team around him which includes Adam Yates, Isaac Del Toro and Aussie Jay Vine.

Del Toro is 34.00 to win, Vine 41.00, so UAE do have options should Ayuso suffer any misfortune.

Ayuso is in good touch after winning the general classification at Tirreno-Adriatico and is well placed to win his first grand tour.

Adam Yates - 6.50

Adam Yates will initially ride in support of team-mate Juan Ayuso, but is more than capable of winning the Giro d'Italia in his own right.

Depending on how the race pans out, Yates could find himself as UAE’s designated leader.

The Englishman is an established general classification rider, winning such races at the Tour de Suisse and Volta a Catalunya in his career.

Yates has yet to podium at a grand tour, but has a great chance of being there when the Giro reaches its conclusion in Rome.

Michael Storer - 17.00

Michael Storer is viewed as one of the outsiders for the Giro d'Italia, but the Australian has a decent chance of being in the mix.

He is in great form after just winning the general classification at the Tour of the Alps, with his Tudor Pro Cycling team.

The Tour of the Alps is the perfect lead-up race to the Giro and shows that Storer will be a force to be reckoned with over the three weeks.

He has also won stages at the Vuelta a Espana and will be one of the best riders when it comes to the high mountains.
