Simon Clarke career so far

Simon Clarke will be best known for his Stage 5 win at the 2022 Tour de France, which came at the twilight of his career.

Clarke has been a professional since 2009 when he joined the UCI pro team ISD-Neri, and although he has enjoyed some memorable wins, the performance in 2022 will live long in the memory.

35 years old at the time, Clarke won the 157km stage in a photo finish, edging out Taco van der Hoorn on the line.

Clarke usually rides as a domestique for others in his team, so to taste individual success on the biggest stage of all, was huge for the Australian.

The win was even more remarkable considering he did not have a team until just before the season 2022 started. But then Israel offered him a deal and he thanked them in the best possible way with the stage win.

It is not the only time that Clarke has tasted success in the grand tours. In 2012, while riding for Aussie team GreenEdge, Clarke won stage 4 of the Vuelta a Espana.

In that Vuelta, Clarke also took out the Mountains Classification to make it even more special.

Clarke returned to the Vuelta in 2018, winning Stage 5, and sandwiched in between, he won two more stages. One at the Tour de France and one at the Giro d'Italia.

However both were Team Time Trials, while riding for GreenEdge.

In total, Clarke has ridden the Tour de France on eight occasions, making it all the way to the end in seven of them.

His best finish was 61st in 2019, but the highlight will be that stage win in 2022, before he was forced to abandon the race through sickness.

What does the future hold?

Clarke is no spring chicken and at the age of 37 is coming towards the end of his career.

Clarke is under contract with Israel until the end of the 2024 season and it remains to be seen if he will be offered a new one.

Much of course will depend on results and his performances for the team.

A return to the Tour de France will be on the cards, maybe even the Giro d'Italia and his experience will be key for the team in 2024.

If at the end of 2024 there is no contract on offer from Israel, Clarke will have to decide whether to hang up the bike or search out a new team.

Whatever happens, the Victorian has had a memorable career with many highlights.
