Tour de France 2025: O'Connor best hope for Aussies

The 2025 Tour de France is fast approaching and once again it is being billed as a two-rider race between the duo of Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard.

Pogacar, who took the honours in 2024, is the hot fancy at 1.36, with Vingegaard next in the betting at 3.20.

It will be a big surprise if the winner is neither of those two, but over a gruelling three weeks of racing, anything can happen.

The Aussies will be well represented once again, but they ride in hope rather than expectation of challenging for the yellow jersey.

But it is not all about yellow, there are stages to be won, and the 2025 Tour de France could still be a successful one for the Australians.

Let’s take a closer look at Australia’s main hopes heading to the Tour.

Tour de France 2025

Ben O’Connor - 151.00

O’Connor will be the leader of Team Jayco AlUla at the 2025 Tour de France, and is Australia’s best hope in the general classification.

The West Australian has proven himself to be a more than capable general classification rider on the world tour, finishing second at last year’s Vuelta a Espana.

He also has form at the Tour de France having finished fourth overall in the 2021 edition of the race.

Being the leader of Jayco AlUla, the team will be going all in for him, in the hope he can shine over the three weeks.

A top 5 finish would be viewed as a huge success for O’Connor, who can be backed at 151.00 to win the Tour de France.

Jai Hindley - 301.00

Another West Australian, Jai Hindley has already tasted grand tour success when winning the Giro d’Italia.

Hindley has struggled to kick on from there and failed to make an impact at the Tour de France when handed the leadership of Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe.

The German team subsequently splashed the cash to sign Primoz Roglic, who will be the leader at the 2025 Tour de France.

It means that Hindley will ride in support of Roglic, and will only get the chance to go for the GC or chase stages, should something happen to the Slovenian.

Hindley also crashed out of the Giro d’Italia last month, and it remains to be seen how he has been affected by that crash.

Hindley is 301.00 to win the Tour de France.

Kaden Groves

Groves is a sprinter for Alpecin-Deceuninck and will be hoping to make the team for the Tour de France.

The Aussie will have to ride in support of the team’s main sprinter Jasper Philipsen, but the opportunity to chase stage wins could present itself.

He has won stages at the Vuelta and Giro and would be in the mix for the sprint stages at the Tour de France as well if the opportunity arose.
