Australian Racing: Delight for Hasten on the cards at Ipswich

There’s five meetings for punters to get involved in this Thursday including a valuable country racing card at Grafton.

Race 7 Grafton

Outlandos @ 10.00

Race 6 Gosford

Saroyan @ 5.00

Race 8 Ipswich

Hasten Delight @ 4.00

Outlandos for Grafton glory

The $200,000 Listed Grafton Cup over 2350m is the highlight of the day with a field of 16 declared for the race which is set to take place on a good 4 track.

The race is due off as the penultimate contest on an eight-race card with Zoumon expected to jump as favourite under Rachel King.

The gelding finished fourth in the Group 1 Australian Derby over 2400m at Randwick in April last year and has since registered four victories.

The four-year-old has been in great form this spell, losing out by a nose in a Benchmark 94 contest over 1800m at Rosehill first up prior to delivering two Listed race successes.

The second of those came by a length in the Caloundra Cup over this trip at Sunshine Coast at the start of this month.

While he rates a very worthy favourite, OUTLANDOS is selected to get the better of him for the in form John Sargent stable.

The handler can boast a 36% strike-rate (4/11) with his runners in the last month, with those wins including a near two length success for his representative here in a 2600m Benchmark 90 event.

That triumph came on a soft 5 track at Randwick, and while any softening of the ground would aid his chances he has performed well on a sound surface in the past.

The six-year-old should have no issue with the drop back in distance he encounters here while he gets in off a low weight with Ben Looker’s two kilogram claim a further positive.

Saroyan to score

A Silvery Warrior is an interesting contender in the sixth race of the day at Gosford.

The 1200m maiden plate is set to take place on a soft 5 track with the gelding due to have his first start since switching from Hong Kong.

The six-year-old showed plenty of ability when racing at Class 4 level when finishing four lengths fourth in a 1200m event on a good track at Sha Tin in January 2021.

However he has made just three starts since that effort, finishing down the field on each occasion including when 11th of 12 over the same track and trip in April of that year.

Trained by Adam Duggan, he has recorded two barrier trial efforts but looks opposable on his first run in over two years.

Trained by Peter & Paul Snowden, SAROYAN gained plenty of experience in barrier trials prior to making his debut at Hawkesbury at the end of last month.

The pick showed solid form by finishing fourth of six, beaten less than two and a half lengths over 1000m on a soft 6 track on that occasion.

The form of that event hasn’t been tested yet but the gelding is expected to have improved for the experience, and stepping up in trip is selected to break his maiden at the second attempt.

Delight to double up

The Peter Robl-trained HASTEN DELIGHT has shown good form in winning two of his three starts to date.

The gelding bids to complete a double in the concluding race on the Ipswich card, a 1200m Class 2 handicap over 1200m.

A good 4 track is expected here with the three-year-old looking to complete a double following a length success when racing first up over 1200m at Murwillumbah on 25th June.

That effort marked the pick’s first outing since a third place finish over 1200m in a Class 1 event at Wyong in February.

Both of those efforts have come on good going and the progressive son of Star Turn is selected to salute under Jag Guthmann-Chester.
