AFL: Demons should open Gather Round with a win

Adelaide and Melbourne get the 2024 AFL Gather Round underway when they clash at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday night.

All 18 AFL teams descend on South Australia this week, with nine games being spread over four days from Thursday to Sunday.

Fixtures will be played at the Adelaide Oval, Norwood Oval and Adelaide Hills, and it is sure to be another exciting round, following on from the success of last year.

And home side Adelaide will be hoping it can help to kick-start their season after they lost their opening three games.

The Crows had set their sights on the top eight, but there is work to be done and they are 3.00 to play finals.

Melbourne have their eyes on the premiership and are 9.00 to win it after a solid start to the season.

Crows search for first win

Adelaide have made a poor start to the season, losing to the Gold Coast Suns, Geelong and Fremantle.

The defeats against the Suns and Dockers were away from home, but they also disappointed when Geelong beat them by 19 points at the Adelaide Oval in round two.

They need a win and there would be no better place to do it than Gather Round.

While it has been a poor start to the season, there have been positives. One of them is Matt Crouch, who is averaging 32.7 disposals a game.

Crouch is in good touch and can be backed at 4.33 to take his game to the next level against the Demons and produce 35+ disposals.

Kicking goals has been an issue and they only managed to score 34 points in the loss to Fremantle at the weekend.

Taylor Walker is averaging just one goal a game but can be backed at 8.50 to boot the first of the night against the Demons.

Izak Rankine can also be backed at 12.00 to get the first.

Demons are on a roll

After losing to Sydney in the opening round, Melbourne have bounced back in fine style to win their next three games on the bounce, so they should also head into the game full of confidence having already won once at the Adelaide Oval this season.

That victory came on Saturday as they knocked over Port Adelaide by seven points in a thriller.

The Demons have stayed on in Adelaide ahead of Thursday night’s game, which means they should be settled and ready to go again.

Melbourne will be boosted by the win over Port and, if they repeat the performance, should run out comfortable winners against the Crows.

They can be backed at 5.50 to win by 13-24 points.

Bayley Fritsch has booted 11 goals already this season, including a crucial kick when the pressure was on at the death against Port Adelaide.

The forward is priced at 9.50 to kick the first on Thursday night, or 1.07 to score at anytime.
