AFL: Do or die for Blues and Swans

Carlton and Sydney go head-to-head in the opening Elimination final and for one of them their season will come to an abrupt end.

Both sides have been in great form over the closing weeks of the AFL regular season and a case could be made for either of them going deep into finals.

Whoever comes out on top at the MCG will believe they have a great chance of making the grand final. Carlton can be backed at 4.25 to make the big dance, the Swans 19.00.

No team would look forward to playing them in a one-off game either. But before we get to that stage we have to see who goes through.

Carlton will fancy their chances on home soil, but the MCG will hold no fear for the Swans either.

Carlton look to bounce back

Carlton had been the form team of the AFL until they slipped up against Greater Western Sydney in the final week of the regular season.

The Giants won by 32 points at Marvel Stadium and it will be interesting to see how Carlton respond.

The loss could turn out to be a blessing in disguise and just the wake-up call they need heading into finals. Better to lose to GWS than the Swans in the Elimination final.

Carlton had won the previous nine games, beating Collingwood, Port Adelaide and Melbourne along the way.

So it shows they have the quality to get the job done. However they will have to do it the long way round after finishing outside of the top four, and it may catch up with them.

Carlton do however have the Coleman Medal winner in their side. Charlie Curnow booted 78 goals in the regular season to claim the award for the second year running.

Curnow can be backed at 5.50 to boot the first goal of the game.

Carlton have received some great news on the injury front as Blake Acres did not fracture his collarbone against GWS and could face the Swans.

Meanwhile, Patrick Cripps and Sam Docherty could also play after missing out against the Giants.

Sydney know how to beat the Blues

Just like Carlton, Sydney had been in great form before they lost their final game of the regular season against Melbourne.

The Swans went down by 21 points, but they must not let the defeat effect them as now it’s the business end of the season and they need to win.

They do have a good record against Carlton when winning the last two games that were both played this season.

Sydney won by 43 points in round one and then by 26 points in round 11. Both games were played in Sydney, and the MCG will be a different proposition, but it should still give them confidence nonetheless.

The Swans have won a few games by just a couple of points, proving they can get the job done when the pressure is on.

We could be in for another tight one at the MCG and Sydney can be backed at 5.50 to win by 1-12 points.
