NRL: Dolphins snap up Cowboys star

Article originally published on (11/05/22)

The Dolphins have made another addition to their roster with the capture of Connelly Lemuelu from the North Queensland Cowboys.

Wayne Bennett’s side will enter the competition from the start of the 2023 NRL campaign and they are slowly but surely building a squad of 30 for their inaugural campaign.

Two-year deal

Lemuela, who can play at centre or as a backrower, will add versatility to Bennett’s roster after penning a two-year deal for the 2023 and 2024 campaigns.

The 23-year-old has struggled for action with the Cowboys this season and has yet to make it on to the field. However the Dolphins feel he will be a valuable addition.

Dolphins CEO Terry Reader spoke in glowing terms of Connelly after the deal was announced and believes they have landed a hot prospect for the future.

Dolphins delight

“Connelly is an exciting prospect in his new position and we are keen to see what he can bring to the Dolphins,” said Reader. “The signing of younger forwards like Connelly, Tom Gilbert and Ray Stone has brought some nice balance to the roster.

“They will complement the class and experience we already have in Felise Kaufusi, Jesse and Kenny Bromwich and Mark Nicholls. Once again, this continues our efforts to build a squad for the future and we are excited about the type of player Connelly can turn into in the NRL.”

The Dolphins are still targeting a top marquee signing though with Melbourne Storm’s Cameron Munster top of Bennett’s wanted list.
