Australian Racing: Donegal Lights to dazzle at Hawkesbury

There's plenty of racing for punters to get stuck into on Sunday including at Hawkesbury who are set to host an eight-race card, and at Swan Hill and Casterton with both tracks set to stage Cup races.

Race 5 Hawkesbury

Donegal Lights @ 6.00

Race 6 Swan Hill

Tapo @ 4.60

Race 6 Casterton

Rolls @ 2.60

Lights for Hawkesbury glory

The fifth race at Hawkesbury takes the eye with the 1300m Class 1 handicap with Terra Mater expected to jump as favourite having shown good form in five starts to date. The daughter of Wandjina had placed in four consecutive starts prior to breaking her maiden over 1200m on a soft 5 track at Bathurst on 25th May.

Successful by half-a-length that day, the form of her third at Randwick Kensington prior is working out well with the second and fifth both winning since.

Tyler Schiller takes the ride here however DONEGAL LIGHTS is preferred on this occasion. The four-year-old has placed second on three of his four starts since returning from a spell including when contesting a 1400m Class 1 handicap at Kembla Grange last month.

That effort came on a soft 5 surface having previously performed well on a heavy 8 track over this distance at Goulburn two weeks earlier.

Grant Buckley's mount has shown a liking for this venue in the past including when runner-up over 1100m here at the start of April.

A good alley in three is a further positive here and the four-year-old is taken to register a second career success.

Tapo for Swan Hill success

It's Cup day at Swan Hill with the big race due off as the eighth race on the card. Two races earlier, a field of 13 three-year-olds are set to go to post for a 1200m Benchmark 64 handicap.

Top weight The Guava has delivered second-place finishes in each of his last two starts including when beaten by a head over 1000m at Sandown Hillside on his penultimate start.

That effort came on a heavy 9 track and he is of note having been beaten less than two-and-a-half-lengths when second over this track and trip at the end of last month.

TAPO has gone well this time around including off a low weight when winning over 1000m in a Benchmark 64 handicap on a soft 6 at Echuca at the start of the month.

The filly made all that day doing having been overhauled late on in an 1100m event at Bendigo prior to that. Rose Hammond's mount has also won in maiden company over 1100m this spell, and having built up a good rapport with her apprentice jockey she is taken to salute from barrier five.

Rolls to take Cup

The 2000m Apsley Cup is the feature race on the Casterton card with the 2000m event due off as the sixth race on the card.

Top weight ROLLS is a Cup winner already this spell having taken out the Listed Warrnambool Cup over 2350m on a heavy 10 surface at Warrnambool early last month.

Victorious by one-and-a-half-lengths that day the gelding could finish only seventh in a 16-runner event over 1800m at Sandown Hillside subsequently.

The eighth and ninth home from the Warrnambool Cup have both won since, while the step up in trip is a positive here.

The six-year-old boasts a 25% strike-rate (4/16) on the forecast soft going, and with promising apprentice Jaylah Kennedy up, he can improve on that by taking this event.
