Australian Racing: Duo aiming for Robert Sangster repeat

There's Group 1 action from Morphettville on Saturday, with the 2023 running of the Robert Sangster Stakes the highlight on a day with plenty of racing action.

Race 7 Morphettville

Bella Nipotina @ 3.60

Race 6 Sunshine Coast

Lady Laguna @ 4.80

Race 8 Gosford

Thalassophile @ 7.00

Bella to take Robert Sangster

Last year's winning stable Ciaron Maher & David Eustace are double-handed in the Robert Sangster this time around, saddling both BELLA NIPOTINA and Ruthless Dame in the 1200m feature contest at Morphettville.

The former looks the pick of their pair, having performed well since finishing just over three lengths fifth in this race 12 months ago.

The daughter of Pride Of Dubai has won in Group 1 company since, when taking last year's Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley.

This time around she has twice placed at the top level, including when beaten a length in the William Reid over this trip back at Moonee Valley in March.

While The Tabtouch Quokka she contested last time out doesn’t have Group-race status, it was a $4,000,000 contest and she acquitted herself well in finishing third on a soft 5 track that day.

The selection handles wet tracks and with a good alley five off the rail here looks up to registering her second victory at this level with Ben Melham booked to ride.

Laguna for Guineas glory

There’s a valuable card at Sunshine Coast, with the sixth race on their nine race card, the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas over 1200m one of three Group races on the card.

Local runner Yellow Brick has shown good form in Queensland in a seven-race career to date and the gelding was chasing a fifth consecutive victory when runner-up here in January.

That effort came in the 1420m $2,000,000 Gold Coast Magic Millions 3yo Guineas with the son of The Mission losing nothing in defeat to Fashion Legend on that occasion.

Barrier nine isn’t ideal here, however, and may give jockey Ben E Thompson some issues if connections want to front-run as was often the case in 2022.

While she has won just three of her 16 career starts LADY LAGUNA has demonstrated good form in both Melbourne and Sydney for handler Annabel Neasham.

The daughter of Overshare has placed five times at Group level and broke through for her first win since taking her second career start in November 2021 when winning at Doomben last month.

That Doomben triumph came when racing close to the speed in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate over 1110m on a good 4 track April 22nd.

Damien Thornton, on board here had a number of his rivals in this contest behind him on that occasion and his mount has a good alley four off the rail.

The soft 5 track here is no issue while the step up to 1200m shouldn’t inconvenience and the filly is taken to register her first success in Group company.

Thalassophile for Gosford victory

The Coast comes up as the eighth race at Gosford, with the 1600m contest the most valuable race on a ten-race card.

Welwal has taken time to come to hand since switching hemispheres following a productive career in France, with his wins including a victory in the Group 3 Prix de Fontainebleau over this trip.

The gelding has placed second on his two most recent starts, but stablemate THALASSOPHILE who has placed on both previous starts at this venue is preferred here.

The most recent of those came when runner-up in the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf over this track and trip on a good 4 surface at the end of December.

The four-year-old has shown good form since, including when winning over this trip in the Group 3 Mostyncopper Aspiration Quality at Randwick on her penultimate start.

The daughter of Not A Single Doubt has a good alley six off the rail here and looks capable of providing jockey Brett Prebble and trainer Chris Waller with a victory.
