The race predominantly features the leading colts who have the stamina for the distance, although fillies are able to enter.
The Epsom Derby takes place on 4th June. It will be the 243rd renewal of the annual contest. It is scheduled to take place at 16:30 UK.
The Epsom Derby is run at Epsom Downs in Surrey. It is one of the most unique racecourses in the world, as the undulations there make it such a strong test for the best thoroughbreds of their generation.
This race often attracts the leading 1m4f horses from, not just the UK, but also Ireland and France.
The Epsom Derby will be shown live on ITV in the UK, while punters can also catch the action from Epsom via our Sports Live Streaming platform.
Like many of the British Classics, that honour is held by Aidan O'Brien (2001, 2002, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2019, 2020).
Ballydoyle trainer O'Brien has been successful with Galileo, High Chaparral, Camelot, Ruler of the World, Australia, Wings Of Eagles, Anthony Van Dyck and Serpentine - this is a race which ranks very highly on his hit list each year.
With an incredible nine victories, it is Lester Piggott. The Hall of Fame jockey first won the race in 1954 with Never Say Die.
He then prevailed on board Crepello (1957), St. Paddy (1960), Sir Ivor (1968), Nijinsky (1970), Roberto (1972), Empery (1976), The Minstrel (1977) and Teenoso (1983).

Aidan O'Brien is bidding for a ninth Epsom Derby success this year and he has Stone Age at 9/4.
The son of Galileo won the Derby Trial at Leopardstown in impressive style on his most recent appearance and he is expected to appreciate the step up in distance at Epsom.
Changingoftheguard is another O'Brien runner who has won his trial for the Derby. The Ballydoyle colt was successful in the Chester Vase and is now 9/2 in the betting - Ruler of the World won that race at Chester before prevailing at Epsom in 2013 for the same connections.
Sir Michael Stoute's colt Desert Crown will get his chance to lay a marker down for the Epsom Derby when he features in the Dante Stakes at York.
The British-based colt won on his debut at Nottingham and is fancied to be a big player in the British Classic. He can be backed at 6/1 for Epsom glory.
The O'Brien family have a great history with the Derby, as Aidan and Joseph have both had success in the race and Donnacha could be the latest to add his name to the roll of honour, as he will saddle Piz Badile. The Ballysax Stakes winner is in the betting at 8/1.
Walk Of Stars (14/1) and New London (14/1) will both carry the silks of Godolphin in the race this year. The two horses are trained by Charlie Appleby, who has made an excellent start to the season.
Appleby was successful in 2021 with Adayar.
