Australian Racing: Eye has a shot at Gatton success

There are four meetings set to take place on Thursday and the programme includes provincial fixtures at Pinjarra Scarpside and Gatton.

Race 6 Gatton

Eye Shoot To Win @ 14/5

Race 4 Pinjarra Scarpside

Runforrob @ 14/5

Race 8 Wagga

Participator @ 6/4

Shoot to score at Gatton

The sixth at Gatton is a competitive looking 1400m Restricted 60 contest. A good 4 track is forecast for the 13-runner affair, with Mandalay Blonde expected to have her supporters.

The daughter of Mahisara has placed on three of her four starts this spell. The most recent of those came when runner-up over 1200m in a Restricted 58 contest at Kilcoy last month.

That Kilcoy contest was held on a soft 5 track but the slightly quicker ground forecast here is no issue.

Claiming rider Emily Lang knows what it takes to win here with her mount stepping up in distance.

Eye Shoot To Win looks the main threat and is preferred on this occasion however.

Mario Caltabiano’s gelding has been on the go since April last year. However his runs have shown no sign of catching up with him, with him having placed on each of his last four starts.

Most recent of those came when beaten just under four lengths into third in a similar race to this over 1350m at Gold Coast.

He had previously placed second in a Class 2 event over 1300m at the same venue. The extra distance here should prove no issue however having run well when a close sixth over the track and trip in September.

Jockey Scott Galloway knows the pick well having partnered the gelding on his last four starts. Versatile tactically the son of Shooting To Win is taken to overcome a wide draw here.

Runforrob to stay unbeaten

Boots Like Bruce is expected to jump a short-priced favourite for the fourth at Pinjarra Scarpside. The race in question is a 1200m Class 1 contest.

The five-year-old gelding made a belated debut when winning by half-a-length over 1200m at Ascot last month. Showed plenty of ability when winning on a good 4 track that day and similar conditions are expected here.

Raced in second for much of that contest, but with no obvious pace rival he is expected to find Runforrob too strong.

Patrick Carbery’s mount is another to have made the perfect start to his racing career. The four-year-old scored by a head over this trip at Pinjarra on debut last month.

He handles the forecast good 4 going and looks the main pace angle in this field. A draw in five is good here and Michael Grantham’s charge looks up to making all.

Participator to register Wagga win

Saiko has shown solid form in two starts this spell, including when runner-up in a 1000m Class 3 here.

Beaten less than three lengths on that occasion he is well drawn in six here. The distance is a concern here however with the gelding failing to win or place in five previous starts at 1200m.

Trainer Tim Donnelly boasts a 23% strike-rate (9/39) here in the last 12 months. His representative here, Participator, looks capable of getting the better of Saiko.

The pick won over this course and distance on each of his first two starts back in 2021. Stepping up to metro level subsequently he delivered two solid efforts at Randwick last year.

The second of those came when runner-up in an 1100m Class 2 contest first up last spell. He has failed to replicate that in two subsequent starts, however.

The return to this venue and a drop in grade are positives here and he can return to winning ways.
