Fiddlers to salute for Neasham

The penultimate race on Bathurst’s seven race card is a 1400m Class 1 handicap contest set to take place on a soft 5 track.

Trainer Claire Lever sends out Luai, who is expected to have his supporters having shown a liking for this venue when breaking his maiden here earlier this month.

Jumping as a short-priced favourite on that occasion, the gelding came home four lengths clear of his rivals when racing on a good 3 track.

The softer going expected here should pose no issues having placed on a wet track in the past however FIDDLERS GREEN is preferred on this occasion.

The three-year-old broke his maiden at the second attempt when successful by over a length in a 1400m maiden on a good 4 surface at Hawkesbury at the start of September.

The 2.90 son of Merchant Navy returned lame when fifth over 1500m in a Kembla Grange Class 1 later that month and he was spelled following that effort.

While the youngster failed to shine in a 799m barrier trial on a heavy 8 track at Warwick Farm last month, he showed up better over 1200m in a similar event at the same venue on 30th January.

Handler Annabel Neasham boasts a strong record here in the last 12 months with a 57% strike-rate (4/7) and her representative is selected to resume with a win.

Crown to down Weave That Web

Earlier on the Bathurst card, Weave That Web is expected to prove popular with punters in the third race of the day.

The six-year-old mare is set to contest a 2000m Benchmark 58 handicap event, with Gary Lunn’s representative having placed on all four starts since taking in a Benchmark 50 race at Warren.

The daughter of Pierro was successful over 1400m that day and, while she is versatile tactics-wise, the Melissa Harrison-trained GILDED CROWN is preferred.

The 4.60 pick has shown good form in three starts since being freshened prior to a fourth in a Dubbo maiden in December and the blinkers worn on his last three starts are retained here.

The booking of Jean Van Overmeire takes the eye for the gelding, who belatedly broke his maiden when triumphing by half-a-length in a 1410m maiden on a soft 6 track at Orange last month.

The seven-year-old delivered a big effort when switched to a Benchmark 58 handicap, beaten less than half-a-length into second having raced from off the pace over 1600m at Parks on 27th January.

Notably the selection had Weave That Web one place behind him when shaping as if the step up in distance he gets here would suit and he is taken to register his second career success.

Westozi for victory

Geraldton handler Albert Bowtell sends out WESTOZI in the finale at his local track, with the race in question a 1413m Benchmark 70+ handicap contest.

The pick registered a half-length victory when racing in a similar contest over 1400m on a good 3 track here in November.

The four-year-old has placed second in three of his four subsequent starts, with the sole exception coming when last of 12 in a metro contest at Ascot in December.

However, the 5.00 selection returned with heat stress and was forced to race wide throughout on that occasion.

Two of apprentice jockey Ava Catarino’s 16 previous wins have come at this circuit and she can add her tally with a victory in this event.
