Five teams to watch out for in 2024 NRL season

As the dust settles on what was a thrilling 2023 grand final, attention has already turned to teams’ chances for the 2024 NRL season.

Here’s a look at five teams to look out for and it’s no real surprise to see where we start.

Penrith Panthers

Outright market - 3.75

Coming from behind to win the 2023 grand final 26-24 in Sydney on Sunday, Penrith Panthers secured a third consecutive title.

Burdened with the favourites tag throughout the season, it looked like the Panthers had faltered at the final hurdle as Brisbane Broncos marched into a 16-point lead.

However, inspired by co-captain and eventual Clive Churchill Medal winner Nathan Cleary, Penrith stormed back to claim a famous victory.

It was the biggest comeback in NRL grand final history and one that has cemented this Panthers’ side in the history books.

All eyes will be on whether the Panthers have the hunger to go again in 2024.

Brisbane Broncos

Outright market - 4.50

The hurt will still be there for everyone involved with the Brisbane Broncos after coming so close to ending their wait for grand final glory.

Brisbane were 24-8 up after 56 minutes but could not find a way to see out the game in Sydney.

Cleary broke Broncos’ hearts with his late try to seal a memorable comeback and now Brisbane will have to dust themselves off and go again in 2024.

Will the hurt of the last grand final spur them on to glory next year?

Sydney Roosters

Outright market - 10.00

Winning all of their last five games of the regular season, and some by impressive margins, the Sydney Roosters seemed to find their rhythm towards the back end of the 2023 campaign.

It saw the Roosters come from behind to sneak into the finals and their journey continued after a 13-12 at Cronulla Sharks.

On to Week 2 in the finals and the Roosters just fell short as they suffered a heartbreaking 18-13 defeat at Melbourne Storm.

There’s a foundation to build on there for the Roosters and they are worth keeping an eye on next season.

New Zealand Warriors

Outright market - 19.00

The New Zealand Warriors were one of the surprise packages of the 2023 season and they will be determined to go again in the new year.

Enjoying one of the best seasons in memory, the Warriors finished the regular season in fourth place and level on points with third-place Melbourne.

Playmaker Shaun Johnson was at the heart of much that was good about the Kiwi outfit and it will be interesting to see if they can kick on next season.

Newcastle Knights

Outright market - 21.00

Newcastle Knights look to be interesting outsiders next season after being the form side at the end of the 2023 regular season.

Winning 10 regular season games on the bounce, Newcastle were on an outstanding run and even secured a 30-28 win over the Canberra Raiders in Week 1 of the finals.

It was to come to an end with a heavy defeat to the Warriors in Week 2 but knowing they can go on an 11-match winning streak will stand them in good stead for next season.
