Australian Racing: French Comet heading for Tamworth triumph

There’s five meetings scheduled to take place on Friday with Ballarat, Tamworth and Rockhampton among those set to stage races.

Race 2 Ballarat

Romanova @ 2.40

Race 2 Tamworth

French Comet @ 3.50

Race 7 Rockhampton

Honkytonk Diva @ 2.20

Romanova to score

The second race on the card at Ballarat is a 1200m fillies maiden restricted to three-year-olds.

The racing at the Victoria venue is set to take place on the synthetic track with the experienced Star Harmony expected to have her supporters in this contest.

The daughter of Zoustar registered a third place finish over this trip at Mornington when racing on a good 4 turf surface in January.

However the filly has finished held on both starts since, including when dropped to 1117m for a maiden at Moe on her return from a break earlier this month.

While she boasts some solid form she looks opposable in this field with ROMANOVA preferred in this contest.

Romanova has yet to race on a synthetic track but has performed well in finishing fourth in both starts this time around.

Those fourth place finishes include a three length defeat over 1100m on a heavy 9 track at Werribee when last in action earlier this month.

Trained by Peter Moody the filly has shown up well in a stronger-looking maiden in the past when third over 1200m in a metro contest at Moonee Valley on debut in December.

Thomas Stockdale retains the ride here and is taken to steer the filly to victory.

Comet for Tamworth success

The second race on Tamworth’s card is a 1400m maiden plate.

A soft 6 track is anticipated for the race with Lady Brulee expected to have supporters following two solid efforts to date.

The first of those saw her finish an in touch last of five over 1400m at Kembla Grange in early April.

A change of trainer followed with the filly taking a step forward when fourth, beaten less than two lengths over 1100m at Gosford just over two weeks ago.

That effort came on a wet track, but a wide alley in 14 here is enough to temper enthusiasm regarding her chances.

FRENCH COMET is the selection here with the experienced four-year-old showing signs that a first victory isn’t far away when beaten two lengths over 1100m at Armidale earlier this month.

The selection was returning from a break that day having finished last of 11 over 1400m at Warrnambool at the start of February on his penultimate outing.

That Warrnambool effort also marked his final start for the Tony & Calvin McEvoy team and jumping from barrier one he looks capable of registering his first victory.

Diva to double up

The concluding race on the Rockhampton card is a competitive looking three-year-old sprint handicap over 1400m.

A good 4 surface is expected with HONKYTONK DIVA selected to complete a double following a victory at this venue at the start of the month.

That effort marked the pick's first since joining the Clinton Taylor stable and he could hardly have been more impressive in winning by an easy four lengths under her jockey here Warwick Satherley.

The selection could have a better barrier given she will jump from nine off the rail in this contest but she has shown she is a versatile type with regards to tactics in the past.

The pick shaped as if the extra 100m she tackles here would suit when winning last time out and she is expected to prove hard to beat in this contest.
