Futurity Stakes: Date, how to watch, past winners & more

The Futurity Stakes is a Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for horses three-years-old and above which takes place at Caulfield Racecourse in late February.

The Futurity Stakes is raced at weight-for-age over 1400m and forms part of the biggest day on the Melbourne Autumn Carnival calendar.

For the winner of the Futurity Stakes, there is also the added prize of an automatic entry into the All-Star Mile, which takes place in March.

The Futurity Stakes is always raced in late February and the 2024 edition will take place on Saturday 24th February.

It is raced on Blue Diamond Stakes day, which is the biggest day of the Autumn Carnival in Melbourne.

There are three Group 1 races on the day, with the Blue Diamond Stakes the headline act, along with the Oakleigh Plate and Futurity Stakes.

The exact start time for the Futurity Stakes has yet to be announced, but is usually Race 8 on a bumper card at Caulfield.

The Futurity Stakes is held at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, but has been raced at both Flemington and Sandown in the past.

Indeed the 2023 Futurity Stakes was raced at Sandown as Caulfield underwent some reconstruction.

Futurity Stakes history

The Futurity Stakes has a long and proud history and was first raced way back in 1898. The first race was won by a horse named Resolute.

Although now raced over 1400m, the Futurity Stakes took place over 1800m in 1979.

Between 2006 and 2011 the Futurity Stakes was raced over 1600m as it was part of the Asian Mile Challenge series.

The race switched back to 1400m in 2011 and has remained that way since.

Futurity Stakes prize money

There is a total prize pot of $750,000 for the Futurity Stakes, with the winner taking home $450,000.

Second wins $135,000 and third $67,000. Sixth, seventh and eighth all pick up $15,000 for their efforts.

Alligator Blood took out the 2023 edition of the Futurity Stakes for trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, with jockey Blake Shinn on board.

Notable winners of the Futurity Stakes include the legendary Phar Lap, Manikato, More Joyous and All Too Hard.

Black Heart Bart is also among the horses to have completed the CF Orr Stakes/Futurity Stakes double.

Mr Brightside is the hot fancy at 2.50 to win and is targeting the CF Orr Stakes/Futurity Stakes double.

Mr Brightside just got up to win the 2024 edition of the CF Orr Stakes and could take some beating when he returns to Caulfield.

Pride of Jenni was pipped in the CF Orr Stakes and can be backed at 6.00 to gain revenge in the Futurity Stakes, while Jimmysstar, Magic Time and Veight are all available at 9.00.
