Guido to take feature

The 4600m Jericho Cup is the most valuable race of the day and the $304,000 contest comes up as the penultimate race on a nine-race card at Warrnambool.

The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Mr Fabulous is expected to have his supporters, having registered a two-length success in a 3200m Benchmark 74 handicap at Wagga a month ago.

While the gelding remains open to improvement on just his ninth career start, it’s notable that he lost out by eight lengths when runner-up at Moonee Valley subsequently.

The 3850m distance at The Valley didn’t appear to be an issue that day however he had GUIDO, who re-opposes here, in front of him on that occasion and that rival is the pick in this contest.

The five-year-old has shown good form in staying contests in the past and delivered a career best effort when successful by eight lengths last time out.

Mitchell Freedman’s gelding shouldn’t have any issues with a wide barrier over this distance and with the good 4 surface to suit he is taken to complete a double with Ross O’Sullivan booked to ride.

Gage for Pinjarra glory

The most valuable race on the Pinjarra card is the Alcoa Pinjarra Grandstand Cup, a Class 5 handicap over 1500m that comes up as the eighth race of the day.

The Grant & Alana Williams send out expected favourite Captain Pluto who’s efforts last season included a down the field finish in the 2500m Group 1 South Australian Derby at Morphettville.

The gelding had his sights lowered somewhat on his first outing in Western Australia, when finishing a close second in a 1400m handicap at Ascot last month.

While the extra 100m he gets here is in his favour, preference is for stablemate GAGE ROADS who will jump from next to the rail.

While William Pike prefers Captain Pluto here, the pick has a more than adequate replacement in Chris Parnham and showed up well when finishing third at Bunbury on 16th November.

That Bunbury effort came when contesting a 1414m Class 5 handicap, having finished a good fourth when racing over 1600m at the same level at Northam two weeks earlier.

The four-year-old has the trip and underfoot conditions to suit and is taken to register his third career win.

Press for Cup success

It’s Cup day at Armidale with the 1900m handicap attracting a field of 14 headed by likely favourite Savvy Lady.

Matthew McGuren’s mount drops down from metro level following two decent efforts at Eagle Farm.

The first of those saw the seven-year-old lose out by just over a length, when third in a Benchmark 78 handicap over 2200m at the end of September.

The son of Savabeel faded when tackling a Benchmark 80 contest over 18 metres shorter two weeks later and has been freshened since that effort.

The gelding will jump from barrier nine here and FULL PRESS is the pick on this occasion.

The selection is already a Cup winner this year, having delivered a near three-length success in the Lismore Cup held over 2110m on a good 3 track in September.

The six-year-old has made just two subsequent starts, with those being a seventh in the Port Macquarie Cup when attempting to make all at Taree and a 13th in the Big Dance.

Adin Thompson’s mount jumped at triple-figure odds when never a factor in the Randwick feature last month and he looks capable of returning to winning ways here.
