Australian Racing: Giga to return with a Kick at Moonee Valley

There's plenty of action for punters to get stuck into on Saturday, with both Rosehill and Moonee Valley staging Group race action.

Attrition to feast for Feehan glory

Moonee Valley plays host to the most valuable race of the day, with the 1600m Group 2 Feehan Stakes due to take place as the ninth contest on a ten-race card.

The five-year-old Globe made a late start to his career given that the gelding only made his racecourse debut at Pakenham back in May.

However, he is now unbeaten in four starts, with the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr-trained charge’s latest success coming in the King’s Coronation Cup handicap.

That contest took place over 1800m on a soft 7 track at Sandown Hillside and he should have no issues switching to a good 4 surface, having debuted with a win in similar conditions.

Barrier 12 is expected to prove more of an issue for jockey Jamie Kah, who takes the ride for the first time with her mount returning from a spell.

ATTRITION is preferred on this occasion, having proven himself at the highest level when a close second in the 1600m Australian Guineas at Flemington in March.

Racing on a good 4 track that day, Mitchell Freedman’s 7.50 gelding tracked the early speed and was spelled following that career-best effort.

Jockey Ben Melham, set to ride here, was on board when the four-year-old returned with a good fifth in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield last month.

The son of Churchill is a fairly versatile type tactics-wise and he looks capable of registering his first Group race success.

Giga to return with a win

Last year’s Everest winner GIGA KICK makes his seasonal debut at Moonee Valley, with the gelding set to contest the Group 2 Mittys McEwen Stakes.

The race, due to take place over 1000m, has attracted a field of seven, with veteran sprinter Zoustyle and multiple-time Group 1 winner Imperatriz also in the field.

Imperatriz won at the top level in New Zealand and registered her first Group 1 victory in Australia when taking out the William Reid Stakes over 1200m here in March.

While unbeaten in three first up starts, the mare has yet to race over this trip and Giga Kick is preferred here.

Trained by Clayton Douglas, 1.95 Giga Kick registered two Group 1 victories following his Everest win last October including by half-a-length in the Doomben 10,000 over 1200m.

Spelled following that Doomben triumph, Craig Williams’ mount has won two of his three first up starts and is expected to prove hard to beat dropping back in distance.

Nugget to shine at Rosehill

The Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes is the feature race at Rosehill and NUGGET, who made good progress last season, is taken to deliver a first up victory here.

The gelding won three times late in 2022 including when taking out the 1700m Lord Stakes handicap at Sandown Hillside in December.

Stepped up to Group 1 company following that effort, the 6.50 pick placed twice from three starts at that level including when beaten a length in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile at Randwick in April.

Barrier nine should prove no issue for the selection, who has gone well from off the pace in the past, while jockey Jason Collett has also won on the pick previously.

The shorter distance here shouldn’t inconvenience the ex-European performer too much and he is taken to deliver a first up victory for the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace team.
