Australian Racing: Gold to remain unbeaten with Scone win

There are just two meetings set to take place on Monday, with racing from Scone in New South Wales and Swan Hill in Victoria for punters to enjoy.

Race 6 Scone

Harbour Gold @ 2.60

Race 8 Scone

Amazing Nicci 12.00

Race 5 Swan Hill

Showies Best Shot @ 4.00

Gold set to stay unbeaten

The sixth race on the Scone card is an interesting looking 1200m Class 1 handicap contest set to take place on a soft 5 surface.

Top weight Heika looks likely to start favourite for the Paul Messara and Leah Gavranich team.

The four-year-old broke his maiden over 1450m at Muswellbrook prior to delivering a good second in a Benchmark 58 handicap over 1750m at the same venue in April.

Connections stepped their gelding up in trip and grade subsequently, with the son of Maurice fading having raced form the front when ninth in the Group 3 Rough Habbit Plate over 2000m at Doomben.

Spelled following that contest he won a barrier trial here earlier this month, but he may find the concession of weight to HARBOUR GOLD too much when dropping markedly in distance.

Mitchell Bell’s mount showed up well in his three barrier trials, including when runner-up over 900m at this venue early last month.

The Start Witness gelding went on to make the perfect start to his racing career when delivering a near one-and-a-half-length victory having raced from the front over 1000m here.

That victory came on a good 3 track and, while the 2.60 pick tackles softer going here, that should prove no issue having appeared effective on a soft 5 surface in a Muswellbrook barrier trial in February.

The three-year-old gets in off a nice weight here and with a good barrier three from the rail he is taken to maintain his unbeaten record.

Nicci to salute for Portelli

Sharp Shock is expected to have his supporters ahead of the finale at Scone, an 1100m Benchmark 66 handicap.

Reece Jones’ mount came from off the pace to deliver a fifth over 1000m in a Class 3 handicap at Randwick on his penultimate start.

The four-year-old is expected to appreciate the extra distance here, but AMAZING NICCI is preferred on this occasion.

The 12.00 five-year-old has shown good form in finishing third on her two most recent starts, including when beaten half-a-length in a Benchmark 66 handicap at Goulburn September 22nd.

That Goulburn effort came over 1000m and she followed that up with a good length third in a similar contest over 1100m at Cootamundra at the start of this month.

The wet track expected here should prove no issues and Gary Portelli’s mare looks capable of delivering a victory from barrier eight.

Shot targeted at Swan Hill success

The fifth race at Scone is an interesting 975m Benchmark 58 handicap for three-year-olds-and-up.

A good 4 track is forecast, with Hannah Le Blanc’s mount SHOWIES BEST SHOT selected to deliver a victory here.

The five-year-old showed good form on the synthetic track at Ballarat earlier this spell, delivering three consecutive placed efforts over 1000m including at Benchmark 64 level.

The mare was freshened prior to making all the running to salute in an 1100m Benchmark 58 handicap on a good 4 surface at Bendigo just over a month ago.

While the daughter of Master Of Design disappointed when sixth of seven in a similar contest over the same track and trip subsequently, it’s of note that she had a valid excuse that day.

The 4.00 pick had been keen throughout that event and, dropping back in distance and with a good barrier in five, she is selected to return to the winners’ enclosure.
