Can Min Woo Lee make a Major breakthrough in 2025?

Australia are fifth on the all-time list of Major championship winners, having had a winner in all of the 'big four' events, but will be there further success in 2025?

Cameron Smith, now playing his trade on LIV Golf, is the last Australian to have tasted Major success following his Open triumph at St Andrews in 2022.

Min Woo Lee's reputation in the world of golf has been steadily growing over the last few years and there are high hopes that he can become the latest player from Down Under to win one of the 'big four' events.

DP wins have built a platform

Lee has been a well-known name on the DP World Tour ever since making his breakthrough at the 2020 ISPS Handa Vic Open, holding off New Zealander Ryan Fox by two strokes.

Further success came at the 2021 Abrdn Scottish Open, overcoming Thomas Detry and Matt Fitzpatrick in a play-off, before he then landed the 2023 Fortinet Australian PGA Championship by three shots.

These wins on the European circuit helped elevate the 26-year-old's game and he has been trying to make his mark on the PGA Tour over the last couple of years.

Having earned special temporary membership on the PGA Tour in May 2023, Lee has been making positive strides across the pond and he did enough in 2024 to earn his 2025 PGA Tour card.

The world number 47 came closest to winning in the states at the Cognizant Classic and the Rocket Mortgage Classic, where he was tied-second in both events.

A maiden PGA victory would help give him that extra belief and confidence and move his game onto the next level.

Improvement required in certain areas

Lee is one of the best drivers of the ball and he ranked fifth in strokes gained: off the tee on the PGA Tour this year, while his driving distance of seventh is further evidence of how capable he is with the big stick.

While his accuracy could do with a little tightening up, there are no real concerns about his driving, but there are other areas of his game that need improving if he is to make the Major grade.

The Australian was 139th in SG: approach the green and 118th in SG: putting, so it's clear where his numbers are weak and he will need to work hard on both of these departments.

Which Major could Lee land?

Lee has made 13 Major appearances, appearing in the Masters, PGA Championship and US Open three times and the Open on four occasions.

His best finish came at the 2023 US Open, where he was tied-fifth, while further finishes of T27 and T21 in this event in 2022 and 2024 respectively suggest he likes this type of test.

The 2025 US Open takes place at Oakmont Country Club and this could be his best chance of claiming Major glory that year.

There have also been positive signs from Lee at the Masters, where his three outings read T14-CUT-T22, but his approach play and short game will need to improve if he wants to land odds of 61.00.

Ultimately, 2025 may come too soon for Lee to make his Major breakthrough, but if he continues on the upward trajectory he has been on over the past coupe of years and fine-tunes areas of his game, one of the 'big four' tournaments could be his down the line.
