US Open 2025: Stars ready for daunting Oakmont test

Oakmont Country Club can strike fear into even the most seasoned professional golfers and it’s the course in Pittsburgh that will be hosting this year's US Open.

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau has claimed this course “challenges your sanity” and not just your game as he prepares for his title defence this week.

With the biggest names in the sport getting set for the challenges at Oakmont Country Club, all eyes are on Pittsburgh to see who will end the four rounds triumphant in the 2025 US Open.

DeChambeau out to repeat Pinehurst heroics

Winning the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, DeChambeau heads to Oakmont looking to become the first player to retain the US Open crown since fellow American Brooks Koepka achieved the feat back in 2018.

This will be the first time the US Open has been played at Oakmont Country Club since 2016, when Dustin Johnson overcame the challenges of the course to claim the title.

DeChambeau has good pedigree in this major event, having also won the title back in 2020 at Winged Foot Golf Club.

One of 23 players in the history of the US Open to have won more than one title, DeChambeau will be hoping to join the likes of Tiger Woods and Hale Irwin as stars to have won this major on three occasions and he’s 8.50 to do so this week.

McIlroy out to build on Masters success

Completing a career Grand Slam by winning the US Masters earlier this year, Rory McIlroy heads back to the US Open where he managed to claim his very first major back in 2011.

It was a 14-year journey from his first major title at Congressional Country Club at the 2011 US Open to getting his hands on the Green Jacket at Augusta this year.

Perhaps freed by the fact he has now achieved the Grand Slam that so many players dream of, McIlroy can look forward to a return to the US Open this week.

Available at 14.00 to win the title at Oakmont this week, McIlroy is the third favourite going into the event behind DeChambeau and 3.80 shot Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler the man to beat

Cruising his way to a four-shot victory at the Memorial Tournament in Columbus, Scheffler continues to impress with his consistency.

The world number one has won three of his last four competitions and it’s little wonder he’s the early favourite to win the 125th US Open.

With three major wins under his belt following his success at the PGA Championship in May, Scheffler is likely to take some stopping to be denied a maiden title at the US Open this year.
