AFL: Grand final hopefuls face-off at the MCG

Carlton and Melbourne are both unbeaten in the last five games, but something has to give at the MCG on Saturday evening.

The two sides appear to be hitting form at just the right time, but it is Carlton who have come from nowhere to climb to fifth spot on the ladder.

Melbourne are up to second spot and need to pick up the maximum points to keep the pressure on ladder-leaders Collingwood.

The Blues and the Demons both have their eyes on the grand final and this clash will be a test of their true premiership credentials.

The MCG will be packed to the rafters for this one and it is tough to predict which way the game will go. One thing is certain, the atmosphere will be hot, and so too the action on the pitch.

No stopping in-form Carlton

A couple of months ago Carlton looked to be on their knees and their chances of making the top eight and playing finals were slim.

However, it has been a miraculous turnaround and now the Blues are the team that everyone around them is fearing.

Carlton have won the last seven games on the bounce and included in that run were victories against Collingwood, Port Adelaide and St Kilda.

Next up is a clash with Melbourne, and the Blues will be confident of pulling off another big scalp.

The two sides have already met this season and Melbourne came out on top when winning 61-44. However, Carlton are a completely different side these days and will be out for revenge.

There is never much between the two sides when they clash, as 2022 proved. Melbourne edged one game by five points and Carlton won the other, also by five.

Carlton are priced at 5.50 to win this latest meeting by 1-12 points, with Melbourne available at 6.00. The Demons are shorter at 5.50 to win by 13-24.

Curnow always a danger

As always, Charlie Curnow will be the big danger up top for Carlton, having booted 68 goals so far this season.

He can be backed at 6.50 to boot the first goal of the night, while Melbourne’s Christian Petracca is priced at 10.00.

Petracca is massive for the Demons in midfield as he is averaging 28.4 disposals a game so far this season.

Demons hit by major blow

Carlton will again be missing Adam Cerra and Sam Walsh with hamstring injuries, but they have been doing okay without them and coach Michael Voss will stick with a winning side.

Melbourne could welcome back Clayton Oliver for the first time since round 10 after he recovered from a niggling hamstring injury.

However, they have been rocked by the news that Harrison Petty has been ruled out for the rest of the season and his boots will take some filling.

Melbourne can be backed at 4.00 to go on and win the grand final, while Carlton are priced at 10.00.
