NRL: Griffin axed by Dragons ahead of Roosters clash

The Dragons head into Friday night’s clash against the Roosters without Anthony Griffin, after he was axed as head coach on Tuesday morning.

It has been a poor start to the season for the Red V, who sit second from bottom on the ladder, with just two wins, and that has cost Griffin his job.

Speculation had been mounting for some time that Griffin was on his way out of the club. Indeed the 2023 campaign looked sure to be his last.

However, the powers that be have decided to pull the plug immediately and Griffin was relieved of his duties on Tuesday.

Assistant Ryan Carr will now take the reins for the game against the Roosters and it will be interesting to see what kind of response comes from the players.

Meanwhile, the Roosters are also in desperate need of a win to get their season back on track, so the clash with the Dragons is all set up to be a cracker.

Hunt concerns for Dragons

The Dragons have had a season to forget so far and have lost the last six games on the bounce heading into Friday night’s clash with the Sydney Roosters.

Despite the fact they had been losing games, there was not much in five of them, and with a bit of luck and better goal-kicking, the Dragons could have turned some into wins.

However, that changed in the last game when they were smashed by 20 points against the Cowboys, and that appears to be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

It will be very interesting to see how the players respond to the axing of Griffin and it could go either way.

One thing is for certain, captain and star playmaker Ben Hunt will not be happy about the situation.

He was known to be very close to Griffin and Hunt’s own future at the club is now uncertain. He will no doubt be the ultimate professional against the Roosters, but there is a chance his game will be affected.

Hunt has scored four tries in his last five games at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium and the Dragons need him to be on the top of his game.

He is priced at 3.60 to score at anytime on Friday night.

Roosters need a response

Just like the Dragons, the Roosters are in need of a big boost after suffering back-to-back defeats to leave them down in 10th spot on the ladder.

But such is the tightness of the competition this season, the Roosters are just two points away from third spot.

However, they need to get on a run of good form, starting against the Dragons on Friday night.

The Roosters were very poor as they were thumped 48-4 against Penrith at the weekend, and it was the effort levels that alarmed coach Trent Robinson the most.

Even star man and captain James Tedesco was well below his best and the Roosters will be determined to respond against the Red V.

Tedesco has scored three tries in his last two games against the Dragons and is priced at 2.33 to do so again.

These two sides met just a few weeks ago on Anzac Day, with the Roosters edging the game by a point, and we could be in for another close one here.

The Roosters can be backed at 7.00 to win by 1-5 points.

The Bondi outfit have also been hit by the news that Joey Manu is facing weeks on the sidelines with an ankle injury.
