AFL: GWS take Giant stride toward grand final

Greater Western Sydney moved into the second week of finals and brought St Kilda’s season to an end, thanks to a 24-point win on Saturday.

The Giants finished the AFL regular season strongly and have taken that form into finals, notching over 100 points in the win at the MCG.

GWS will now go on to meet Port Adelaide in next week’s semi-final. They have momentum on their side and will take a heap of confidence to the Adelaide Oval, where a victory will put them into a preliminary final.

Greater Western Sydney are priced at 2.45 to beat Port Adelaide, who can be backed at 1.56 to get the job done.

As for St Kilda, it has been a positive 2023 in so many ways, making a return to finals, but they must go away and lick their wounds before coming back stronger in 2024.

Giants off to a flyer

The Giants needed to get off to a strong start in front of a packed MCG on Saturday, and they did just that.

They booted five goals in the opening quarter of the game, compared to St Kilda’s two, and that was the springboard they needed to set up the victory.

GWS looked to have the game wrapped up in the third quarter as they lead by 43 points, but they will be disappointed with the way they allowed St Kilda back into the game.

Jack Higgins booted the first goal of the final quarter to get St Kilda to within three goals of GWS, but the visitors responded to push the lead out to 30 points and get the job done.

GWS peaking at just the right time

Greater Western Sydney have been flying for some time now and all the signs indicate they are peaking at just the right time.

No-one will fancy playing them in this mood, and it is Port Adelaide who will have to come up with a plan to stifle their blistering attack.

The Giants can be backed at 15.00 to go all the way and win the grand final.

They can also be backed at 7.00 to reach the grand final, and on this form, that cannot be ruled out.

GWS have won 10 games out of the last 12, and the manner of the win over St Kilda was impressive to say the least.

Giants turn on the style

GWS are playing their best football at just the right time, and that was on show again in the win over St Kilda.

The Saints have been sound in defence all season, but GWS, with their fast, furious, exciting brand of footy, took them apart on Saturday.

Jake Riccardi impressed when booting three goals, and he can be backed at 13.00 to grab the first goal of the game against Port Adelaide.

Toby Bedford, Callum M. Brown, Josh Kelly and Jesse Hogan also chipped in with two goals each. Toby Greene had to settle for the one.

Tom Green was also outstanding for GWS when producing 36 disposals, five tackles, five clearances and also 705 metres gained.
