Big Bash: Heat and Stars clash in BBL opener

The new Big Bash League campaign gets underway on Thursday with Brisbane Heat taking on the Melbourne Stars.

The Heat made it all the way to the final before losing to Perth Scorchers last season and they will be out to go one better in BBL 13.

They can be backed at 8.00 to do just that and will be keen to get off to a solid start against a Stars side that are tipped to struggle.

The Stars are priced at 4.20 to finish bottom of the ladder, so have a point to prove heading into the opening game.

Big double boost for Heat

Brisbane Heat have been handed a big double boost with the news Australian Test stars Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne have made themselves available.

Australia will play their first Test of the summer against Pakistan in Perth next week, but that is not stopping the star duo from turning out.

Labuschagne has had a quick recharge following Australia’s success at the World Cup and can be backed at 5.00 to be Team – Top Batter on Thursday night.

Khawaja has had more of a rest leading up to the summer of Test cricket and is available at 3.60 to hit the ground running and be the Heat’s top run scorer.

The Heat will be missing a number of key players for the opener as they have been named in the Prime Minister’s XI squad to face Pakistan.

They are Matthew Renshaw, Nathan McSweeney, Jimmy Peirson and Michael Neser.

Brisbane will however have all of their three draft picks, Colin Munro, Sam Billings and Paul Walter, available.

Stars lifted by Maxwell and Stoinis return

The Stars suffered a big setback on the eve of the tournament with the news that Harry Brook had withdrawn from the squad.

The England Test batsman cited a heavy workload as the reason and the Stars have been scrambling around to find a replacement.

They are reported to have someone, but their identity has yet to be revealed.

It is not all doom and gloom however as they are boosted by the return of Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis from Australia duty.

Both starred in the World Cup and stayed on to play in the T20 International series against India.

Maxwell is 3.50 to be Team – Top Batter, while Stoinis can be backed at 5.00.

The Stars will also have their Pakistan duo of Haris Rauf and Usama Mir available for the opening match.

Rauf is 3.75 to finish as Team – Top Bowler.
