Brisbane Heat v Perth Scorchers preview: Scorchers can put heat on Brisbane

Perth Scorchers are the team to beat in the Big Bash League this season and Brisbane Heat look set for another tough evening when they meet at The Gabba on Wednesday night.

The Heat have managed just two wins from their first eight games of the competition and would need to produce their performance of the season to take down the red hot Scorchers.

Scorchers on fire

With six wins from their opening eight games of the campaign, Perth have been finding a level of consistency that will have their rivals concerned.

The Scorchers’ bowling attack has been especially impressive with the likes of Andrew Tye, Jhye Richardson and Jason Behrendorff all shining this season.

Tye, Richardson and Behrendorff have managed 43 wickets between them. Unfortunately for Perth, Richardson will have to sit out Wednesday’s encounter due to injury but in-form Tye looks ready to set up and fill the void.

The 36-year-old has managed to bag three wickets in three of his last five games and is a seamer who has been impressing with his consistency of delivery.

Recording figures of 3-37 last time out against Brisbane, Tye might well cause more problems for the Heat on Wednesday.

The Australia ODI and T20 bowler is 5/2 in the Team - Top Bowler market for Perth in this upcoming clash at The Gabba.

Heat must put last meeting behind them

After a seven-wicket defeat the last time these two sides met on 7th January, Brisbane can’t afford to dwell on that encounter.

In the home comforts of The Gabba, coach Wade Seccombe will be desperately seeking a way to cause a major upset as his seventh-place Heat take on the second-placed Perth.

Looking at the positives from that defeat to the Scorchers last time out, Brisbane openers Colin Munro and Josh Brown did impress with bat in hand.

Scoring 45 and 34 runs respectively, Munro and Brown set a solid foundation but were not backed up by their team-mates further down the batting order.

Sam Billings and Jimmy Pierson threatened to let loose but the pair were dismissed for 27 and 23 runs respectively.

Tye and Behrendorff, along with Lance Morris and Matthew Kelly, did a great job for the Scorchers that day in the bowling department.

Brisbane’s batters need to find a way to try and neautralise that bowling attack if they are to stand a chance of claiming their third BBL win of the season on Wednesday.

Perth have the quality to come through

With a team brimming with confidence, especially after that seven-wicket win last time out, Perth will take some stopping at The Gabba.

Tye and Behrendorff have been impressive with ball in hand and, along with Morris and Kelly, should continue to fill the void left by the injured Richardson.

Meanwhile, the Perth batting lineup have also been earning deserved plaudits for their recent performances.

In the last win over Brisbane, Cameron Bancroft was a standout performer with bat in hand as he managed to score an unbeaten 76 runs from just 48 deliveries.

Aaron Hardie also played an important role in the victory at Optus Stadium, as he scored 57 runs from 33 balls before being run out by Billings. Bancroft is available at 7/2 to be Perth’s top run scorer on the night at The Gabba, while Hardie is at 10/3 in the Team - Top Batter market.

If Brisbane are to cause an upset on home soil, they will need one of their top batters to step up and produce a memorable innings. Captain Usman Khawaja is more than capable of getting a big score out in the middle and the 36-year-old is 13/5 in the Team - Top Batter market for the Heat.

Marnus Labuschagne is another batter Brisbane supporters will be looking to for a big performance and he’s 3/1 in the same market.

Even if Khawaja or Labuschagne get going out in the middle, it will require more than that to stop this Scorchers side landing their seventh win of the season on Wednesday night.
