NRL: Heavyweight showdown at the Gabba in store

Sydney Roosters will be eyeing an upset against the Brisbane Broncos at the Gabba on Thursday night to keep their hopes of a top-eight finish alive.

The Roosters have been showing signs of progress of late but they will be set for a stern test against the impressive Broncos.

As the regular season edges towards a conclusion, the Broncos are finding their rhythm and were impressive in their victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs last time out.

However, the 36-20 win on the road against the Rabbitohs came at a price, with both winger Jesse Arthars and forward Martin Taupau picking up suspensions that will see them miss the arrival of the Roosters on Thursday.

In positive news for the Broncos, prop Thomas Flegler has recovered from a foot injury which means he’s back in the starting lineup, while Keenan Palasia features on the bench.

With Arthars out missing due to suspension, Deine Mariner comes in on the wing, while Brendan Piakura has been brought into the pack to replace Taupau.

Sat in second place in the NRL ladder, it’s little surprise the Broncos are the favourites going into this one on home soil, with Brisbane at 1.36 for the win.

Rooster finding their voice

The Roosters’ confidence will have been given a boost following their last performance, as they secured a 36-18 win over the Gold Coast Titans.

Leading 30-0 at the break, Sydney took to their foot off the gas somewhat in the second 40, but still had far too much quality for the Titans.

The Roosters are also boosted by a player returning from injury, with Victor Radley back after recovering from hamstring tightness.

Radley’s return is the only change to the side that cruised past the Titans last time out, which Nathan Brown reverts back to the bench.

The Roosters might be finding form but they will need to continue picking up wins to stand a chance of finishing in the top eight this season.

Sydney, who are 3.20 to win at the Gabba this week, find themselves two points off the eighth-place Parramatta Eels.

From the Eels, down to the 14th-placed Titans, just four points separate seven teams all competing to finish in those coveted top-eight places.

Daniel Tupou is the favourite for the Roosters in the Anytime tryscorer market to score in Thursday’s clash, while he is 12.00 to bag the opener.

Broncos star Selwyn Cobbo is the overall favourite to score a try on Thursday at 1.87, while the 21-year-old is also available at 8.00 to score the first try of the contest.
