The Northerly Stakes, formerly known as the Kingston Town Classic, is contested over a distance of 1800m and sees some of the best middle-distance horses going head-to-head.

The race is now named after Northerly, who was a champion racehorse from Western Australia back in the early 2000s.

The Northerly Stakes has the honour of being the last Group 1 race of the calendar year on the Australian programme.

In 2022, Racing WA announced an increase in prize money to some major races, including this one, and the race is now worth $1,500,000.
