Back then it was a Principal Race that was run over 1200m, but from 1972 onwards the distance increased to 1400m.
Between 1982 and 1988 the race was also known as the Elders Handicap.

Stefi Magnetica was the winner of the 2024 edition of the Stradbroke Handicap for trainer Bjorn Baker and jockey Zac Lloyd.
There have been some big winners of the Stradbroke Handicap, with Rough Habit (1991, 1992) and Black Piranha (2009, 2010) both winning it in consecutive years.
Other notable winners include Alligator Blood in 2022 and Santa Ana Lane in 2018.
Joliestar and War Machine are both priced at 6.00 to win the 2025 edition of the Stradbroke Handicap.
