Big Bash preview: Hurricanes and Thunder must weather storm

Hobart Hurricanes have lost three out of four games in BBL 13 and will be searching for a much-needed win against Sydney Thunder on New Year’s Day.

The Canes are priced at 2.80 to reach the top four and play finals, but with the matches fast running out, that will take some effort.

Avoiding the wooden spoon will also be on their mind. They can be backed at 4.50 to finish bottom, with Melbourne Renegades the hot fancies at 2.10.

Meanwhile the Thunder are in the same boat, and have work to do to climb the ladder. They can be backed at 5.00 to finish bottom.

It is a big game for both sides and the Canes will be hoping home advantage can swing the game their way.

Canes need to get on a roll

The Hurricanes have just one win to their name and that came against the Melbourne Renegades on 23rd December.

They were hoping to back that up in the next game against Melbourne Stars, only to lose a rain-effected match by seven wickets.

In that match a number of batsman got themselves in but then failed to kick on and make the big scores that were required.

Caleb Jewell and Mac Wright were guilty of that when reaching 45 and 33 respectively before losing their wicket.

The middle order then failed miserably before Nick Chaudhary rallied down the order with 32 runs to make the score respectable.

A total of 155 was not enough as the rain came in and the Stars were set a revised target via DLS method and they made 67-3 with three balls to spare.

Riley Meredith made an impact when taking two wickets, while Nathan Ellis also chipped in with one.

The duo were also among the wickets in the win over the Renegades and will pose a big threat to the Thunder batting line-up.

Thunder need duo to shine

Sydney Thunder will be relying on openers Alex Hales and Cameron Bancroft to put on a good score against the Hurricanes.

They both did just that in the win against the Melbourne Stars as Hales put on 40 off 26 deliveries, Bancroft 30 off 20 deliveries.

Bancroft is the man in form with another 46 runs against Brisbane Heat, while Hales made 28.

Oliver Davies is also in form with a couple of good knocks, but now the Thunder need the rest of the batting line-up to step up and put on a big total.

From a bowling point of view, Daniel Sams is on fire after becoming the only player to take five wickets in a match in BBL 13.

That came when he took 5-30 against Brisbane Heat, while he also took four in the match before.

Sams will be the hot fancy to finish the match as the Thunder’s Team – Top Bowler.
