Big Bash Women: Hurricanes look to go back-to-back

Hobart Hurricanes will look to continue their strong start to Big Bash Women 2024 when they travel to take on the Melbourne Stars on Sunday.

The Hurricanes edged out Brisbane Heat in a thriller on Saturday and will need to recover quickly when they take on the Stars the day after.

Back-to-back wins on successive days will be a big ask for the Hurricanes, but they should be on a high after winning two of their opening three games.

The Stars got their WBBL campaign up and running with a much-need win over the Sydney Sixers in their last outing.

It came after an opening loss against the Perth Scorchers, and now they need to go back-to-back and see off the Hurricanes in St Kilda.

The Stars can be backed at 7.00 to go all the way and make the WBBL final, and another win would boost their chances.

Lanning remains key for Stars

Meg Lanning continues to shine for the Stars and was at her best in the victory over the Sydney Sixers.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Stars marched to an impressive 195-4 off their 20 overs and Lanning was one of the stars of the show.

She finished on 58 not out, made off just 36 deliveries and she is sure to be in the mix for team top batter against the Hurricanes.

Lanning continues to go from strength-to-strength and is 1.16 to be the Stars’ team top batter for the WBBL campaign.

Rhys McKenna was just as impressive when smashing 52 runs off 22 deliveries as the Stars notched a match-winning innings.

As the match was hit by the weather, the Sixers were set a total of 89 runs off 8.3 overs to win, but they got nowhere near as the Stars pinned them back.

Captain Annabel Sutherland took one of the four wickets to fall, while Kim Garth, Tess Flintoff and Sophie Day also striking.

Hurricanes are on a roll

The Hurricanes will be on a high after chasing down a sizeable total to beat the Brisbane Heat on Saturday.

The Heat made 173-5 off their 20 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat, but the Canes managed to reach the target with just three deliveries remaining.

They lost just three wickets in the process with Danni Wyatt-Hodge top-scoring with 62 runs off 35 deliveries.

It was left to captain Elyse Villani and Heather Graham to keep their nerve with unbeaten knocks of 32 and 26 respectively, to see the Hurricanes over the line.

Earlier Kathryn Bryce had been the pick of the Hurricanes bowlers when taking 2-22 off her three overs bowled.
