Australian Racing: Ikigai Star out to shine bright at Rockhampton

There are six meetings set to take place on Thursday including provincial fixtures at Wyong, Pinjarra and Rockhampton.

Race 8 Wyong

Surfers Royale @ 4.20

Race 6 Rockhampton

Ikigai Star @ 6.00

Race 6 Pinjarra

Kisses From Kelly @ 3.00

Royale for Wyong glory

Skylight Song is expected to prove popular in the finale at Wyong. The race concerned is a 1350m Benchmark 64 contest with a good 4 surface forecast.

Trained by Mark Newnham, the three-year-old showed solid form in his last spell placing second in three of his five starts including at Kemble Grange on a good 3 surface in in November.

The switch to a soft 6 track and slight drop in trip to 1350m saw the gelding deliver his first victory when recording a near length success at this venue earlier this month.

The son of Your Song was racing first up that day, and tackling winners for the first time here is expected to find grade dropper SURFERS ROYALE too good in this contest.

The selection has raced from the front in the past including when winning a Class 1 by half-a-length over 1300m on a heavy 10 track at Hawkesbury in October.

Spelled following a below par effort ton a good 3 track at Warwick Farm subsequently the gelding performed well when third over 1300m in Hawkesbury on his return to action earlier this month.

That effort came at Benchmark 68 level and it’s notable that the winner that day Olentia went on to Group 3 success in the James H B Carr Stakes at Randwick last weekend.

With the drop in grade in his favour here the Casino Prince gelding looks up to doubling his career tally.

Star for Rockhampton success

Tricky Beans raced in a stronger contest when last in action and he is expected to jump as favourite for the sixth at Rockhampton following two starts this spell.

The race concerned is a 1600m Benchmark 55 contest with a good 4 track forecast. The second of those previously mentioned efforts came when beaten over four-and-a-half-lengths into fifth in a 1300m Class 4 event at Mackay earlier this month.

The booking of Ryan Wiggins is a further positive here, however last start winner IKIGAI STAR is taken to get the better of the four-year-old.

Trained by John Wigginton, the pick had placed third in four consecutive starts in maiden company prior to delivering a one-and-a-half-length victory when making all over 1600m here.

The son of Mikki Isle raced from the front that day but is a versatile type tactics wise having performed well when ridden with more restraint in the past.

Adam Spinks takes the ride for the first time, and with a good barrier in four, can steer the three-year-old to a second career success.

Kelly to break maiden

The sixth race at Pinjarra takes the eye with the 1500m maiden set to take place on a good 4 surface. Trainer Holly Taylor is represented by KISSES FROM KELLY who is taken to deliver his first victory at the third time of asking.

While the pick was never involved when debuting with a last of seven in a 1400m contest at Belmont Park last month, it’s of note that he met interference with around 250m to run.

A marked step forward followed that effort with the son of Demerit delivering a third place finish in a 1400m maiden at this venue at the start of this month.

The front three finished clear of the field on that occasion, and the gelding shaped as if the extra 100m he encounters here would prove no issue.

Troy Turner, on board for both previous starts is again booked to ride, and from a rail barrier he can steer the three-year-old to victory.
