Order looks Good for Northam Cup

The Northam Cup is the penultimate race on a nine-race card in Western Australia, with a field of 14 set to line up for the 1600m Listed handicap.

Bucket’s Ridge is expected to have his supporters having performed well in Group company as a three-year-old last season.

The gelding took out the 2200m Listed Melvista Stakes on a good 4 track at Ascot prior to placing second in the W.A.T.C. Derby, a 2400m Group 2 event at the same venue.

The four-year-old has acquitted himself well over shorter distances this campaign, including when taking out a Benchmark 72+ handicap over 1650m at Belmont last month.

Grant & Alana Williams’ representative has been freshened since that effort, however preference is for fellow four-year-old IN GOOD ORDER.

The son of American Pharoah finished behind Bucket’s Ridge in both the Melvista Stakes and the W.A.T.C. Derby last season.

However, the 4.80 gelding has shown good form back down in distance this prep, winning twice over 1600m at Belmont Park last month.

The second of those victories came by over a length in a Benchmark 66+ handicap held on a good 4 surface.

Chris Parnham’s mount arrives here on the back of a third in a 1600m Benchmark 72+ handicap at Ascot recently and a wide alley shouldn’t pose too many issues given his running style.

Daniel Morton’s galloper has shown a liking for this venue in the past, winning twice here last season, and he is taken to record the fifth win of his career.

Hooves goes for Coonabarabran glory

Coonabarabran’s feature race, the Coonabarabran Cup, is the seventh race of the day with Rhythm Is A Dancer expected to feature prominently in the betting for the 1600m open handicap.

The six-year-old has been relatively lightly raced since landing a 1400m Cup contest at Scone in May last year.

The gelding broke through for his first win this prep when contesting a 1200m Benchmark 82 handicap at Tamworth at the end of last month.

Brett Cavanough’s representative followed that effort up with a second-placed finish in a 1500m Cup event at Port Macquarie just over two weeks ago.

A four-time winner last prep, DANCES WITH HOOVES is expected to prove too much for him here, however, with the filly racing third up this prep.

Cameron Crockett’s filly is a confirmed stayer having won over 1850m in a Benchmark 64 handicap at Newcastle at the start of April.

The 2.30 pick has been racing over shorter since resuming, however, including when delivering a respectable sixth in a 1300m Benchmark 72 handicap at Rosehill on her return to action.

The Real Steel filly took a step forward when beaten less than a length into third in a 1350m handicap at Newcastle just over a week ago.

The selection raced on wet tracks for both of those efforts and she is expected to be ridden cold as was the case at Newcastle.

The extra distance here is in her favour, with Ashley Morgan’s mount looking ready to strike racing third up.

Bay ready to salute at Sale

The seventh race of the day at Sale is the Listed Sale Cup over 1600m.

A good 4 track is expected for the handicap contest, with ARRAN BAY no stranger to Cup racing having contested three Cup races in 2023.

The gelding’s efforts in Cup contests that year included a second in the 2100m Benalla Gold Cup just under 13 months ago.

The 4.00 six-year-old has gone on to score three times in 2024, including twice at Flemington, most recently in the 1600m Furphy Mile held on a good 4 track at the end of March.

Phillip Stokes’ son of All Too Hard has registered two respectable efforts in 1400m Listed races at Flemington this time around and stepping up in distance looks up to delivering a victory.
