India v Australia: First T20I preview

Just days after winning the World Cup, Australia will turn their attention to a T20I series against India, with the first match taking place on Thursday.

The series, which will consist of five matches, has come in for some heavy criticism and highlights the jam-packed nature of the international cricket calendar.

Once this series is done, Australia will have played a total of 26 matches in India during 2023.

The two teams will be unrecognisable from the ones that contested the World Cup final, but it does present an opportunity for players to shine ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.

The build up to that tournament, which will be played in the Caribbean and USA, can start here, so there is plenty riding on the series, even if it is a case of being ‘after the lord mayor’s show’.

Warner withdraws from squad

David Warner was of course a key figure in Australia’s World Cup success, but he will not feature in the T20 series.

Warner has been allowed to withdraw from the series and return home to rest up before the Test series against Pakistan.

The opening batsman will retire from Test cricket after that series, so it is no surprise that he wants to be fresh and ready to go out on a high.

It does mean that Steve Smith will get the chance to open the batting alongside Travis Head, the hero of the World Cup final.

Smith has often spoken of his desire to open in the shortest format of the game and now gets a chance to stake a claim ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Australia will be missing both Warner and Mitch Marsh and Smith can be backed at 4.50 to be Team – Top Batter in the opening match.

Head is 3.60 and should be buzzing after his man-of-the-match performance on Sunday.

Aaron Hardie is the player that comes in to replace Warner, while Tanveer Sangha will also get the chance to shine in a new-look Aussie side.

Australia will also be missing their first-choice bowling attack, but again that gives others the chance to showcase their talents.

Sean Abbott is set to lead the pace attack and is priced at 4.50 to be Team – Top Bowler.

Australia squad: Matthew Wade (c), Aaron Hardie, Jason Behrendorff, Sean Abbott, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa.

India make mass changes

India remains in a state of mourning follow the World Cup final loss, and that has been reflected in the squad they have selected for the entire series.

Only Suryakumar Yadav, who played in the World Cup, is named to play and he will also captain the side.

India squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar, Shreyas Iyer.
