Jack Haig is an Australian road cyclist who showcased his talents in 2021 when finishing third at the Vuelta a Espana.

Haig has had to live in the shadow of other Australian general classification riders such as Jai Hindley, Ben O’Connor and Jay Vine.

However, the 30-year-old has forged out a solid career in his own right and is currently on the books of Team Bahrain Victorious.

The Queenslander is set to ride more grand tours in the 2024 season and will be looking to push his way back into the top 10.

Here is all you need to know about Jack Haig.

Professional career so far

Haig started out racing mountain bikes early in his career but made the switch to road cycling and landed his first big contract with Australian team Orica-GreenEDGE.

Haig stayed with Orica from 2016 to 2020 and enjoyed some success when picking up his first professional win in 2017.

That year he finished third overall at the Tour of Slovenia and eighth at the Tour de Pologne. It was in Poland were he earned his first win, taking out Stage 6.

While racing with Orica, Haig also just missed out on the podium at Paris-Nice in 2019 when finishing fourth.

Haig made the switch to Bahrain Victorious in 2021 and has put in some consistent performances in big one-week stage races over the last few years.

The Criterium du Dauphine, which is seen as the ideal lead-up to the Tour de France, has been one of Haig’s favourite races.

He has finished fifth in each of the last three seasons, while he has also been a regular in the top 10 at Paris-Nice.

Without doubt through, Haig’s biggest success was at the Vuelta in 2021 when he managed to make it to the podium, finishing third overall.

Unfortunately Haig has not managed to kick on from there and did not even race in the Vuelta in 2023.

However, he still has a good few years ahead of him and is capable of getting some big results once again.

What does the future hold for Jack Haig?

Cycling seems to be a young man’s game these days with the likes of Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel bursting onto the scene and winning races at an early age.

However, at the age of 30, Haig still has a number of good years ahead of him.

Haig is a good climber that is suited to grand tour racing and he will be hoping to race in at least two of them in 2024.

He finished 19th at the 2023 Giro d’Italia and 28th at the Tour de France, and will feel there is room for improvement there.

Now that Mikel Landa has left the team, there could be more opportunities for Haig to be a team leader at one of the grand tours, but the roster still looks strong.

Haig did have 77 racedays in 2023, the second highest of his career. He also earned his team 511 points, so he is a valuable rider for Bahrain.
