Keats set to claim Moe Cup

The penultimate race on Moe’s nine race card is the Moe Cup, a 2050m handicap event set to take place on a good 4 track.

Independent Road is expected to jump as favourite to register his second win of 2024, having won over the Cox Plate track and trip at Moonee Valley in January.

The eight-year-old has registered a couple of good efforts in defeat in two starts this prep, including when fourth over an inadequate 1500m back at Moonee Valley last month.

The gelding stepped up in distance when fifth in a handicap held over 1800m when racing on the Hillside track at Sandown three weeks later.

While those efforts are expected to have put him spot on for this event, preference is for fellow veteran KEATS, who finished one place ahead of him at Sandown.

The 4.00 selection, who usually races from the front, employed such tactics prior to fading late on in a race won by a hold-up performer on that occasion.

The son of Galileo had been beaten just over one-and-a-half-lengths when contesting a 1700m handicap on a heavy 9 track at Flemington prior.

While any softening of the going would be no issue, Gavin Bedggood’s representative has won at a higher level in the past and looks up to returning to winning ways.

Prime to make Gold Cup Impact

The seventh race at Taree Gold Cup is a 2000m open handicap expected to be held on a heavy 8 track.

The race carries Big Dance eligibility, with I Am The Empire expected to prove popular for Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald.

The six-year-old delivered some good, placed efforts earlier this prep, including when losing out narrowly on a soft 5 track at Gold Coast last month.

The gelding raced on a quicker good 4 surface when delivering a near five length victory in a 2200m Benchmark 78 handicap at Doomben subsequently.

The son of Camelot has won on a heavy track in the past and, while he holds obvious claims, PRIME IMPACT is the pick in this event.

The five-year-old lost out by half-a-length when finishing runner-up in a 1900m Benchmark 82 handicap at Kempsey last month.

The 9.00 selection raced close to the speed on that occasion and raced from the front when breaking through for a win in the 1800m Port Macquarie Cup Prelude at Port Macquarie ten days later.

The Snitzel gelding has performed well on a heavy 8 surface in the past and barrier eight shouldn’t pose too many issues.

The gelding has performed well over further in the past and, with Dylan Gibbons up, he is taken to complete a double.

Inferno goes for Pakenham glory

The seventh race at Pakenham is a 1600m Benchmark 58 handicap for fillies & mares.

A soft 5 track is expected, with Ciaron Maher’s filly BELLE INFERNO taking the eye in this contest.

The four-year-old broke her maiden when competing over 1514m on a good 4 track at Moonee Valley in February.

The pick was spelled following a fourth in a small field Sandown Class 1 contest later that month and she has delivered two good fourth-place finishes since resuming.

The 3.20 filly raced from off the pace prior to finishing fourth when beaten just over two lengths in a 1325m Benchmark 64 handicap at Geelong at the start of last month.

A change of tactics saw the selection fade late on when fifth in a 1500m Benchmark 64 handicap held on a soft 5 track at Ballarat later that month.

Apprentice Luke Cartwright takes a valuable two kilograms off and, stepping up in distance, his mount is taken to double her career tally.
