The King Charles III Stakes is a Group 1 thoroughbred horse race which takes place at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney, in October.

Previously known as the George Main Stakes, the King Charles III Stakes is raced under weight-for-age conditions over 1600m.

With $5million in prizemoney up for grabs, the King Charles III Stakes is now one of the richest races on the Australian racing calendar.

The 2024 edition of the King Charles III Stakes will take place on Saturday 19th October.

When the race was known as the George Main Stakes, it was raced in mid-September.

However, after the race was upgraded following the coronation of King Charles III on 6th May 2023, it was switched to October.

King Charles III Stakes history

Known as the George Main Stakes, the race first took place in 1945 and was won by a horse by the name of Modulation.

Up until 1978, it was a Principal Race, before being upgraded to a Group 1 from 1979. It has remained that way since.

The race distance was initially 1 mile but was increased to 1600m from 1972.

The race was then renamed in honour of King Charles III in July 2023.

The King Charles III Stakes has a total prize fund of $5million with the winner of the race taking home a tidy $2,950,000.

Second wins $850,000, with third place picking up $425,000.

Those who finish 11th and 12th in the race also take home $20,000 for their efforts.

Fangirl was the winner of the 2023 edition of the King Charles III Stakes for trainer Chris Waller and jockey James McDonald.

Winx is the most famous winner of the race, with the super mare winning it three times on the bounce from 2016 to 2018.

More Joyous and Kingston Town are also among the famous star milers to have won the race.
