Having witnessed Think About It win the 2023 event, here’s everything you need to know about the Kingsford-Smith Cup going into this year’s race.
The Kingsford-Smith takes place on Saturday 1st June with the time of the race yet to be confirmed.
Eagle Farm Racecourse in Brisbane, Queensland will again host the Kingsford-Smith Cup this year. Previous races have been at Doomben Racecourse.
The 2024 Kingsford-Smith Cup will be shown on Channel 7.
The very first Kingsford-Smith Cup was raced in 1964 and was originally named the J.T Delaney Quality Handicap for the first 18 years of its existence.
After various names through the years, this event was named the Kingsford-Smith Cup in 2017 and has been so ever since.
Going back to the first race in 1964, Rashlore was the first-ever winner of this event.
Buck’s Pride is the only horse to have won back-to-back years in the Kingsford-Smith Cup, while Think About It was the last winner in 2023.
Some famous horses have claimed victory in this race including Apache Cat in 2008 and Black Caviar in 2011.
The Kingsford-Smith Cup is a Brisbane Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred Weight for Age contest, run over a distance of 1,300 metres.
Only horses three years old and older are eligible to compete in this particular race.
The total prize money for the 2024 race in $1,000,000, with first place scooping a grand total of $600,000.
Second will receive $180,000, with third $90,000. Prize money is rewarded up to and including 10th place.
I Wish I Win is the early 4.00 favourite ahead of the 2024 Kingsford-Smith Cup.
Think About It is 5.00 to become just the second horse to secure back-to-back titles in this event.
Other contenders include Antino and Magic Time, both at 7.00, and Espiona, who is currently available at 9.00 to take the victory.
