NRL: Knights need some home comforts

Newcastle Knights should be well rested after the bye and need to make it count when they take on Gold Coast Titans on Sunday.

The Knights were the unlucky team to miss out on Magic Round in Brisbane last weekend, and caused something of a stir by jetting off to Bali on holiday.

Some have suggested they could have used their time better by being on the training ground and the critics will be out in full force if they fail to beat the Titans.

Gold Coast have no such issues and are sitting in the finals spots, but they cannot afford to rest on their laurels and another win is needed.

Both sides hope to be in the top eight at the end of the season and even at this early stage, this game could be crucial,

The Knights have improved on the performances they put in 2022, but they are still not where they want to be and there is work to be done.

They have won three, drawn one and lost five - leaving them in 12th spot on the ladder going into this weekend's games.

Newcastle have shown what they can do with good wins over the Tigers, Raiders and Warriors - while reigning premiers Penrith only pipped them by a point.

However, they have lost the last three games on the bounce and the 43-12 defeat against Parramatta in their last game was hugely disappointing.

The Eels have not been in great form themselves, so to lose so heavily to them was a big setback for Adam O’Brien’s side.

Newcastle will be delighted to be playing at McDonald Jones Stadium, where they have won three out of four this season.

Not only that, they have won the last four games against the Titans on home soil and appear to have the wood over them.

They are also boosted by the return of Adam Elliott, who is making his first appearance since picking up a groin injury in round one.

Titans out for three in a row

Gold Coast are another side that have made great strides this season and they go into the game on the back of big wins over Manly Sea Eagles and Parramatta.

This could be the year they return to finals, but there is still work to be done, and winning three on a row would enhance their credentials further.

It will be far from easy though considering their recent record at Newcastle, where they have won just three games in 15 attempts.

However, the Titans are a different animal this season and have a couple of players who are making a real difference.

New boy Kieran Foran is showing some of the best form of his career, while David Fifita is also tearing it up.

Alofiana Khan-Pereira has scored nine tries so far this season and can be backed at 1.95 to score at anytime in Sunday’s game. Fifita and Dominic Young are also sure to be threats.

Coach Justin Holbrook has made just one change to his squad with Kruise Leeming coming on to the bench at the expense of Keano Kini.

The Titans form on the road has not been great. Their one and only win on opposition soil did come at Manly in round seven, so that should give them confidence.
