Australian Racing: Lady Redwood can tower over rivals

There are five meetings set to take place on Thursday including eight-race cards at Gosford, Warrnambool and Gatton.

Race 3 Gosford

Lady Redwood @ 3.60

Race 1 Warrnambool

Sardonian @ 3.20

Race 6 Gatton

Zattastar @ 2.60

Lady to complete double

The third race at Gosford takes the eye with the 1900m Benchmark 64 handicap set to take place on a good 4 track.

Majestic Style is expected to start favourite, having doubled her career tally when winning by over a length in a 1600m Class 1 handicap here early last month.

Tom Sherry is again in the saddle, however it’s notable that both of the four-year-old’s victories have come on wet tracks.

With the above in mind, she looks opposable with fellow last-time-out winner LADY REDWOOD preferred in this contest.

The six-year-old showed good form when delivering a length victory in a Benchmark 72 handicap over 2200m at Warwick Farm at the start of last month.

Trained by Paul Murray, the mare should have no issues with the drop in distance she gets here, having placed second racing over 1600m at Kembla Grange when racing first up this spell.

The daughter of Redwood raced in mid-division when winning at Warwick Farm, however, she has been ridden from off the pace in the past.

The switch to provincial racing and drop to a Benchmark 64 handicap are both in her favour here and, while she has to concede weight here, she looks up to doing just that under Adam Hyeronimus.

Sardonian to break maiden

The opening contest on the Warrnambool card is an interesting 2000m maiden plate. A good 4 track is expected for the race with Peaky Ridge likely to have her supporters.

The filly has shown good form over shorter distance in two starts to date, including when fourth over 1400m at Hamilton on debut.

The three-year-old followed that effort up with a narrow defeat when runner-up over 1600m at Ballarat on 26th October.

Both of those efforts have come on the forecast good 4 going and Declan Bates’ mount shapes as if the step up in distance she gets here will suit.

However, preference is for SARDONIAN who has a wide alley to overcome with Dean Yendall booked to ride.

The pick failed to shine in two starts earlier this year but took a step forward when third in a 1700m maiden at this venue early last month.

That course contest came on a good 4 track and the gelding again encountered a sound surface when third over 1881m at Kyneton subsequently.

The application of blinkers for the first time should sharpen Matthew Williams’ gelding up and he can help the trainer improve on his impressive 20% strike-rate (7/35) here in the last year.

Zattastar to complete double

The sixth race on the Gatton card is an interesting 1400m Restricted 55 handicap and ZATTASTAR is expected to prove hard to beat.

The six-year-old showed good form when placing third in an 1100m Restricted 58 handicap on a good 4 track here just under a month ago.

The selection followed that effort up with a victory by just under half-a-length in a 1310m Benchmark 58 handicap at Lismore on 22nd October.

The mare finished strongly at Lismore and the extra distance she tackles here should prove no issue, having performed well over further in the past.

Damien Thornton, on board here on her penultimate start, is again in the saddle and he can steer the daughter of Zoustar to victory from barrier four.
