Australian Racing: Les Vampires looks to impress at Rosehill

There’s plenty of action for punters to get stuck into on Saturday, with Rosehill’s two Group 3 contests providing the feature races of the day.

Race 7 Rosehill

Les Vampires @ 3.80

Race 8 Rosehill

Corniche @ 5.00

Race 9 Cairns

Namazu @ 1.60

Les Vampires to complete double

The first of the two Group 3 contests at Rosehill is the Up And Coming Stakes over 1300m and restricted to three-year-olds.

The James Cummings-trained Tom Kitten will have to concede weight to his rivals having shown good form last year - including when winning in Listed company on his penultimate start.

The colt followed that up with a fourth in the 1600m Group 1 Champagne Stakes at Randwick in April and looks up against it conceding four kilograms or more to his rivals.

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained LES VAMPIRES is the pick here, having shown a good level of form when racing from the front in two starts to date.

The first of those saw the pick registered a third-place finish in a 1200m maiden at Canterbury a month ago.

While the 3.80 selection is the sole winner to emerge from that event, a number of the beaten horses have placed subsequently including the second and fourth.

Les Vampires himself broke his maiden at the second attempt when saluting over 1200m at Warwick Farm two weeks ago and he is taken to deliver a victory stepping up in grade.

Corniche for San Domenico success

The Waterhouse & Bott team look to hold strong claims of taking the 1100m Group 3 San Domenico Stakes, due off as the eighth race at Rosehill.

The training partnership are represented by The Instructor in the three-year-old-only contest.

Their colt won twice at two, including when delivering a near one-and-a-half-length victory in the Blue Diamond Preview over 1000m at Sandown Hillside in January.

The son of Russian Revolution has failed to score in two subsequent starts including when finishing in mid-division in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes over 1200m in February.

The three-year-old performed better in Listed company in the Chandon Rosebud over this track and trip on his seasonal debut earlier this month.

However, barrier eight isn’t ideal here and CORNICHE is preferred for the James Cummings team.

The colt showed that he is up to performing at this level when third in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude over this trip at Sandown Hillside in February.

The 5.00 selection showed that he handles wet tracks when victorious in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes over 1200m on a soft 5 surface at Randwick two weeks later.

The son of Fastnet Rock has trialled well ahead of his return to action and he is taken to deliver a victory conceding weight to his rivals here.

Namazu to go back-to-back in Cup

The Cairns Cup is the big race of the day at Cairns with a field of 17 declared for the 2100m contest.

The winner of this race 12 months ago and fourth in 2021, NAMAZU is expected to prove hard to beat for the Ricky Vale stable here.

The six-year-old has won two of his last three starts, with the sole defeat coming when narrowly beaten in the 2000m Mackay Cup at Mackay July 22nd.

That Mackay effort came on a good 4 track with the pick racing close to the pace under regular pilot Ryan Wiggins.

Wiggins rode the 1.60 pick with more restraint prior to delivering an impressive six-length success when subsequently contesting a 16-runner renewal of the 2000m Townsville Cup at Townsville.

While the son of Medgalia d’Oro has to concede weight to his rivals here, he ticks plenty of boxes and is taken to register his 12th win in 37 career starts.
