AFL: Lions continue to roar

Brisbane Lions will continue the quest to win their first premiership since 2003 when they take on Port Adelaide in the second qualifying final.

The Lions won three premierships on the bounce in 2001, 2002 and 2003, and although they have been a regular in finals in recent years, they have failed to add to it.

Many pundits and fans of AFL believe this could be the year, and they are priced at 4.00 to win the 2023 grand final.

After finishing second on the ladder they are now guaranteed two home finals and will be out to see off Port Adelaide in the first one.

That will be easier said than done as the Power have been one of the stand-out teams in the AFL this season and seem to be back on track after a run of poor results.

A trip to the Gabba will test them out for sure and we are in for another cracking qualifying final.

Lions are flying high

Brisbane are flying after winning their last four games on the bounce to clinch second spot on the ladder.

Included in that winning streak was a victory over Collingwood in Melbourne, which should give them the belief they have what it takes to go all the way.

Their record in finals has not been great in recent years and they have crashed out in straight sets when in a similar position before.

However they appear to be stronger than ever under the leadership of Chris Fagan and have been a formidable outfit, particularly on home soil, this season.

They have lost just five games all season, but all of them have been away from the Gabba, which shows just how strong they are on home soil.

But the recent wins at Collingwood and Fremantle show that Brisbane can get the job done anywhere and are currently at the top of their game.

In three of the last four wins however there has been no more than eight points in it, and the clash with Port is likely to be another close one.

Brisbane can be backed at 6.00 to win by 1-12 points.

Power back on track

Port Adelaide’s season looked to be in danger of falling apart after they lost four games on the spin, but they bounced back well to win the next three.

Home wins against Richmond and GWS with a victory over Fremantle in Perth sandwiched in between, will have given the whole club a lift and they should be buzzing heading into finals.

They have struggled in their last two trips to the Gabba however, losing both games, and will need to find a way to get the job done on this occasion.

Ken Hinkley’s men do have quality all over the pitch however and Zak Butters has a massive role to play in the midfield.

He will be up against some quality in the form of Lachie Neale and co, but has been averaging 27.5 disposals a game this season.

Butters is priced at 1.20 to produce 25+ against the Lions, while Neale is 1.28 to do the same.

Port did beat the Lions by 54 points in round one this season, but that was at the Adelaide Oval and will seem a long time ago now.
