AFL: Lions expect to bounce back out west

Brisbane Lions and Melbourne Demons will both be looking to respond to opening-round defeats when they return to action on Sunday.

The Lions suffered a rare defeat on home soil as Carlton came from behind to beat them by a point, while Melbourne were disappointing when losing to Sydney at the SCG.

Brisbane are 6.50 to win the grand final in 2024 but need to bounce back when they travel to the west to take on Fremantle.

Melbourne are 11.00 to win the grand final and will also be looking for a response when they take on Western Bulldogs at the MCG.

Sandwiched in between those two games on Sunday is a clash between Port Adelaide and West Coast.

The Power are expected to be in contention again, but it could be a long season for the Eagles, who continue with the rebuild.

They are 1.80 to suffer most losses in 2024.

Demons look to home advantage

What: Melbourne v Western Bulldogs
Where: MCG, Melbourne
When: 13:00, Sunday 17th March 2024
How to watch: Kayo, Foxtel
Odds: Melbourne 1.62, Western Bulldogs 2.30

Melbourne disappointed when losing by 22 points in Sydney last week, but back on home soil they will be out to bounce back.

Bayley Fritsch still managed to catch the eye with four goals and is 8.50 to score the first on Sunday.

Clayton Oliver and Jack Viney both produced 30 disposals against the Swans and are 2.25 and 3.00 respectively to hit 30+ this game.

It is a tough opening game of the season for the Bulldogs, who lost this fixture by 50 points 12 months ago.

If the Bulldogs are to turn the tables, it will be tight, and they can be backed at 5.50 to win by 1-12 points.

Eagles expected to down Port

What: Port Adelaide v West Coast
Where: Adelaide Oval, Adelaide
When: 16:00, Sunday 17th March 2024
How to watch: Kayo, Foxtel, Channel 7
Odds: Port Adelaide 1.05, West Coast 10.00

Port Adelaide were back among the contenders last season and will be targeting the same in the 2024 campaign.

Nothing other than a heavy victory over the Eagles will do and they can be backed at 4.00 to win by 73+ points.

They won by 40 at the Adelaide Oval last season, and by 84 in 2022, and it is expected to be another tough afternoon for the Eagles.

Willie Rioli will be up against his former club and can be backed at 8.50 to boot the first goal of the game. Oscar Allen is 11.00 should the Eagles take an early lead.

Brisbane to be tested out west

What: Fremantle v Brisbane
Where: Optus Stadium, Perth
When: 18:50, Sunday 17th March 2024
How to watch: Kayo, Foxtel, Channel 7
Odds: Fremantle 2.35, Brisbane 1.60

Brisbane need to bounce back after losing to Carlton last week, but it will not be easy in the west.

They did win at Optus Stadium last season, but only by three points, and the time before that they lost by 14.

Brisbane have also been hit by the news that former Dockers star Lachie Neale misses out through injury, along with Keidean Coleman.

Charlie Cameron grabbed a couple of goals against Carlton last week and is 10.00 to score the first on Sunday.

Fremantle will be keen to make Optus a fortress once again in 2024 and can be backed at 5.50 to win by 1-12 points.
