AFL: Lions eyeing second spot

Five of the top eight teams on the AFL ladder are in action on Saturday afternoon and there is plenty at stake as the business end of the season approaches.

Adelaide and Port Adelaide may take centre stage in ‘The Showdown’ but there are four other games to look forward to on a bumper day of action.

Geelong still have work to do to make the top eight and their home clash against Fremantle has to be viewed as a must-win game for them.

Brisbane sit in third spot but now have their eyes on second after closing the gap on Port Adelaide to just four points. The Lions face a Gold Coast side who still have an outside chance of making the eight.

There is also another big game as fifth-placed Western Bulldogs take on Greater Western Sydney, who are level on points with them but two spots below on the ladder. To wrap up the day Essendon take on Sydney Swans.

Geelong suffered their first defeat in five games last weekend but it was against Brisbane at the Gabba, and there was only 11 points between the two sides.

The Cats will be out to bounce back against a Fremantle side that have seen their finals hopes disappear with four defeats on the spin.

However, the Dockers have shown they can win in Victoria this season when knocking over the Demons and they have won the last two games against Geelong.

Geelong are boosted by the return of Gary Rohan, who can be backed at 11.00 to boot the first goal of the game.

Bulldogs back on track

Western Bulldogs bounced back to winning ways last week when seeing off Essendon by 21 points, and it is just what they needed after two straight defeats.

However they are in for another stern test when they take on the Giants, who are the form team in the AFL with five wins on the spin.

One of those was against Melbourne at the MCG, so the Giants will hold no fears heading back to Victoria to take on the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs have won the last three games between the two sides, however, and are priced at 6.00 to win by 1-12 points in this one.

There is a big derby clash on the Gold Coast and the Suns need to pull off a big shock to keep their finals hopes alive.

The Suns have won just one game in the last five, but that was on home soil against St Kilda, and they need another win here.

Brisbane on the other hand continue to fly high and sit third on the ladder following four wins from the last five games.

They knocked over Geelong by 11 points last week and will again look to the likes of Joe Daniher and Lachie Neale to shine.

Daniher is 8.50 to kick the first goal of the game.

Essendon and Sydney are locked together on the ladder in 11th and 12th spot respectively. But it is Essendon that have a two-point advantage and that could be crucial when it comes to squeezing into the top eight.

Essendon have hit a poor patch at just the wrong time, winning just once in the last five games, but the Swans will be buzzing after winning their last two. This game could be a tight one, with both sides priced at 6.00 to win by 1-12 points.
