AFL: Lions roar into prelim final

Brisbane Lions are through to a preliminary final after smashing Port Adelaide by 48 points at the Gabba on Saturday night.

The Lions put in a blistering performance and can now rest up and prepare for a prelim against either Melbourne or Carlton.

Chris Fagan’s side have the bit between their teeth and can be backed at 3.25 to go all the way and win the 2023 AFL grand final.

As for Port Adelaide, they will get a second bite of the cherry but must pick themselves up quickly for a tough game against Greater Western Sydney.

The Power are priced at 10.00 to win the grand final but will need to raise their game if they are to do so.

Sloppy start at the Gabba

The clash got off to a sloppy, nervy start with both sides missing plenty of good opportunities in the opening two quarters.

Brisbane lead by just 16 points at the halfway mark, but burst into life in a dominant third quarter that took the game away from the Power.

The Lions booted eight goals, compared to Port Adelaide’s four, to open up a commanding 36-point lead, and it was game over.

Brisbane added a further three goals in the final quarter, Port Adelaide two, to run out 123-75 winners.

Daniher star of the show

Joe Daniher was in electric form with the boot when kicking five goals on the night, while Charlie Cameron, who was playing his 200th AFL game, helped himself to two.

The Lions were assured and confident in front of goal with Jaspa Fletcher and Cam Rayner also kicking three each.

Such form bodes well for the rest of finals, and they will need to reproduce it when they come up against the Demons or Blues.

It should not be an issue however. They have been in outstanding form on home soil this season and remain unbeaten at the Gabba in 2023.

It will take some performance from Melbourne or Carlton to stop them on this form.

Lions out to end drought

Brisbane are now in their third preliminary final in the last four years and will be hoping to break the grand final drought.

It is 19 years since they last played in a grand final and can be backed at 1.57 to reach the 2023 edition.

Concerns for Port Adelaide

The Power will need to bounce back against Greater Western Sydney and they already have injury concerns over one or two players heading into the game.

Dylan Williams and Trent McKenzie are already rated doubtful for the semi-final showdown, while Charlie Dixon will also face a race against time.

Port Adelaide will have the backing of a packed Adelaide Oval and home advantage could turn out to be crucial against the Giants.

Despite the loss to the Lions, there were positives for Port to take out of the game.

In particular the performance of Ollie Lord, who was making his finals debut and managed to boot four goals.

Now his team-mates need to step up and support him against GWS.

Lord can be backed at 13.00 to boot the first goal against the Giants.
