Golf: LIV Golf Chicago preview

There are two tournaments remaining in the 2023 LIV Golf season and Australia’s Cameron Smith could be crowned Individual Champion in Chicago on Sunday.

LIV Golf Chicago will get underway at Rich Harvest Farms on Friday, with the tournament being concluded on Sunday.

The season will be wrapped up at LIV Golf Jeddah, which will be played 13th to 15th October, but if Smith wins in Chicago and his closest rival finishes off the podium, he will claim the title before then.

It is all set up to be an exciting three days of action in Sugar Grove, Illinois, and GC Rippers captain Smith will be going all out to get the job done.

Current standings heading to Chicago

As things stand Cameron Smith is at the top of the individual standings with 170 points after winning two of the last three LIV Golf tournaments.

The Australian holds a 21-point lead over three-time winner Talor Gooch, while Patrick Reed is in third place, 50 points behind Smith.

Brooks Koepka and Branden Grace sit fourth and fifth respectively and are tied on 112 points.

Smith in pole position

Cameron Smith is priced at 8.00 to win LIV Golf Chicago, and if he does come out on top he could be crowned the Individual Champion for 2023.

Smith is in great form having won in London and Bedminster, while his third LIV Golf win came in Chicago in 2022.

On that occasion Smith finished on 13 under par, three strokes ahead of Dustin Johnson and Peter Uihlein. The same again would do very nicely for the Open Champion.

Three strokes or more for the Player Tournament Winning Margin can be backed at 17.00.

Gooch in the mix

Talor Gooch remains well in the frame to be crowned Individual Champion and can be backed at 15.00 to win in Chicago.

Even finishing in the top three will mean the race for the title will be taken to Jeddah. Gooch can be backed at 5.25 for a top-three finish.

If Smith wins in Chicago and picks up 40 points, then Gooch will have to finish in the top three or the Australian will take the Individual title.

Other players in contention

There are a total of nine players still in contention for the Individual title heading into the LIV Golf Chicago.

As well as Smith, Gooch and Reed, the others are Brooks Koepka, Branden Grace, Mito Pereira, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson and Harold Varner III.

Johnson is currently the defending Individual Champion and can be backed at 15.00 to win in Chicago.

Varner III is the biggest outsider of those still in contention and can be backed at 26.00.

If Smith wins or finishes second, then everyone apart from Gooch will be out of the race to be named Individual Champion.
