Australian Racing: McEvoy and Cigar Flick look good at Canterbury

There is plenty of racing action to enjoy on Monday, with wet tracks forecast for all five meetings taking place.

They race at Cairns, Canterbury, Gawler, Mornington and Murwillumbah.

Race 7 Canterbury

Cigar Flick @ 4.20

Race 5 Mornington

Sojustkoby @ 13.00

Race 7 Murwillumbah

North Of Eli @ 2.70

Cigar set for Canterbury success

There’s metro action from Canterbury, with a Benchmark 88 handicap over 1100m set to take place as the seventh race on the card the day’s feature.

There are a number of non-runners in the field, with Mogo Magic for the Scott Collings stable expected to jump as favourite.

The four-year-old finished down the field when tenth in The Kosciuszko over 1200m at Randwick in October and he performed well when racing first up this prep.

The gelding was beaten one-and-a-half-lengths over 1000m when contesting a Benchmark 78 handicap back at Randwick on 25th May on that occasion.

The son of Dupporth is unproven on the forecast heavy 9 going, however, and with that in mind CIGAR FLICK is preferred for the Chris Waller team.

The filly was beaten just over four lengths when ninth in the Group 3 P J Bell Stakes over 1200m at Randwick in April.

While the 4.20 pick could finish only ninth that day, she has demonstrated good form in two of her three starts since with both of those efforts coming at Rosehill.

The three-year-old has been ridden from off the pace in recent starts, including when finishing strongly to salute by two-and-a-half-lengths at the start of this month.

The selection contested a Benchmark 72 handicap on a heavy 9 surface that day and looks ready for this step up in grade.

Kerrin McEvoy takes the ride for the first time since the pair finished fifth together in a Group 2 at Randwick in September and he can steer her to victory here.

Sojustkoby seems strong at Mornington

The fifth race at Mornington takes the eye, with Moonhaven expected to have his supporters for the 1000m Benchmark 70 handicap.

Trained by Anthony & Sam Freedman, the gelding has won first up in his last two preps including when returning with a track and trip win on 13th May.

The three-year-old won by just under half-a-length having raced wide and without cover on a soft 5 track that day.

However, the son of Shalaa steps up in grade and has a wide barrier to overcome if he is to complete a double.

While SOJUSTKOBY failed to shine on his only previous start on a wet track, it’s of note that it came on a heavy 8 when jumping at $26 for a Group 3 contest.

The selection has been lightly-raced since that Group 3 event at Moonee Valley in October 2022, making just four subsequent starts.

The four-year-old won both starts in 2023, including by half-a-length in a 1200m Benchmark 64 handicap at Avoca in March of that year.

The 13.00 gelding showed he retains plenty of ability when third in a 1200m Benchmark 70 handicap at Cranbourne when racing first up early last month.

While the pick failed to shine at Bendigo when last of 11 subsequently, he was stepping up to 1300m for the first time that day.

The drop to 1000m shouldn’t pose too many issues and with an inside alley he is taken to register the fourth win of his career.

Eli to salute at Murwillumbah

The finale at Murwillumbah is an interesting 1200m Benchmark 58 handicap set to take place on a heavy 9 track.

NORTH OF ELI raced at Eagle Farm in Brisbane in his first three starts this prep, registering a good fifth over 1000m in a handicap there first up.

The three-year-old jumped at $201 when down the field in a Listed contest over 1400m at the track on his penultimate outing.

The 2.70 selection was freshened following that effort and he showed a liking for this track and trip when narrowly beaten in a similar race to this 24th May.

Ben Looker’s mount has to concede weight to his rivals here and, having proven he handles heavy going that day, he looks capable of going one better in this event.
