A-League: Melbourne City v Central Coast preview

Two of the A-Leagues entertainers, Melbourne City and Central Coast Mariners, will battle it out in the A-League Grand Final on Saturday night.

It is fair to say that the best two teams in the 2022/23 A-League campaign have made it all the way to the big dance, and one of them will be crowned champions at CommBank Stadium.

City finished top of the pile at the end of the regular season, winning the minor premiership, while the Mariners were best of the rest when finishing second.

After impressing in finals, both City and the Mariners will fancy their chances of getting the job done, and picking a winner is tough to call.

Melbourne City have been the stand-out side in the A-League all season, but the Mariners have had a great campaign and anything can happen in a one-off game.

One thing is almost certain, we look set for an open, exciting Grand Final, and a goal-fest could also be on the cards.

Both Melbourne City and Central Coast Mariners have got it spot on this season when peaking at just the right time.

City have been consistent all season, but the Mariners had their ups and downs before winning four of the last five games to pinch second spot from Adelaide United.

They then beat the Reds over two legs in the semi-finals to book their place in the Grand Final. The Mariners have also averaged almost three goals a game over the last seven matches, and conceded just five during that spell.

After scoring goals for fun and keeping it tight at the back, the Mariners should be brimming with confidence.

So too will Melbourne City after they demolished Sydney FC in the semi-final. After drawing the first leg 1-1 in Sydney, City romped to a 4-0 victory at AAMI Park in the second leg.

Melbourne have also been free-scoring throughout the season and we could be in for a high-scoring affair on Saturday. Over 2.5 goals in the game can be backed at 1.53

Previous meetings in 2022/23

Despite both sides scoring plenty of goals this season, the two games between them were low-scoring. City scored 61 goals in the regular season, the Mariners 55.

However, City edged to a 1-0 win at AAMI Park back in December, while the return game finished 1-1 last month.

If we are in for a close one it could go beyond the 90 minutes. City are priced at 11.00 to win in extra-time, the Mariners 15.00

Players to watch

It goes without saying that both sides are packed with quality all over the park, and have players that can rise to the occasion.

However, two in particular stand-out and both are in-form strikers, Jamie Maclaren and Jason Cummings. Maclaren was back to his best in the 2022/23 campaign when scoring 24 goals in 28 matches and chipping in with two assists.

Cummings is also the Mariners leading goalscorer with 17 goals in 27 matches, but set up a few more with six assists throughout the season.

Both players will be key in the Grand Final and the game could hinge on who takes the chances that come their way. Maclaren can be backed at 1.61 to score at anytime, Cummings 2.30
